MAJOR memory leak with mj

Post by jwryahoo »

Hi,
I've had some problems with my computer after plugging MJ into it. After having it (MJ) run for a little over 24 hours non stop -- my computer would not shut down or reboot. I had to turn it off by disconnecting the power.

I thought to myself -- this thing (MJ) is slowly draining "all" the memory.

So, after restarting the computer (Manually) I did a couple of tests. Here are my results:

I started MJ fresh. Using the Windows Task Manager I was able to monitor the amount of memory it uses.

1. With MJ just sitting in the system tray it starts out by using a little over 1 meg -- within about 5 minutes its up to 13.9 megs and continues to clime -- that's just sitting in the system tray -- no calls either outgoing or incoming.

2. With the gui on screen it then jumps to 21 megs and continues to clime within minutes to 26 megs and still continues to climb without it being used for outgoing calls or incoming calls.

3. If you now make a call it jumps even higher -- when the call is finished a very slight amount of memory about 600K) is released, but that is then taken up within minutes as the memory leak continues to consume your ram memory.

I would guess -- as it did with my system -- if you keep your desktop computer -- or any computer for that matter -- turned on with the MJ plugged in -- it would bring that computer quickly to its knees.

I think this "bug" needs to be fixed if this MJ is going to be at all useful -- otherwise it's not worth the money -- even if it is a small amount of money -- because of the hastles.

BTW: Someone may ask what my system specs are:

HP Athlon 2400+ XP sp2 - with alll current updates / 1 gig ram and independent video memory.

Any suggestions from anyone would be grateful. I can't run this MJ for more than 24 hours at a time because it cripples my system. I also don't think continually rebooting it is the answer either. It seems this MJ is far too buggy.

Blessings

Must be your machine 'cause mine has been on for the past 3 days and I still have 5 messengers open and running a video thru windoze movie thingy and everything else that's normally running and I ain't gots no memory leak. Plus editing vids and making some vids/tuts. And the phone has rang in 8 times in the past 3 days with numerous outgoing calls made all the while everything running smoothly.
Maintenance of YOUR machine IS everything

My computer's been on all day any MJ is only using 15MB. Seems to be something with your config that's the problem. Maybe it hasn't done the update or something?

I mean, I have to laugh at this, 15 megs? For what? All of you have a config problem and you all paid for the privelage.

Ya, it's called Windows! Seriously, that can be said of every Microsoft product. Anyway, I know 15MB seems ridiculous, but unfortunately bloated software has been accepted as the norm. BTW, I'd just started my computer and MJ started at <6MB, so it's definitely eating memory, but not at the exaggerated rate that jwryahoo would have everyone believe.

Different User Name

Post by Road_ »

I installed my MJ under a User Name that never really gets used, we'll call it MAGIC.

I log in to the MAGIC account just to start the MJ application. Then I SWITCH users to my normal work and game playing accounts.
My MJ has been running for about 3 days straight now, and Task Manager says it's using 22,784 K when idle. If I pick up the Handset, it goes up to 22,792 K, but that's it, and when I hang up, it drops back to 22,784 K. If it goes up any higher I'll let you know.

I installed MJ on a separate account because I was tired of the MJ app always popping up over my other apps. Having it on my other account prevents this, but still allows incoming and outgoing calls. Unfortunately, I can't see CallID when doing this.

UPDATE:
I switched users to the MAGIC account, and the MJ app was on the screen. I pulled up TaskManager, and confirmed that MJ was still using about 23,000 K. I minimized the MJ app to the taskbar, and the memory being used dropped to 3,000 K.
I un-minimized the app, and the memory jumped up to 8,000K. So it appears that MJ (or windows) isn't releasing memory from somewhere. Right now, I'm guessing it's holding the miniature web pages in the left frame of the MJ application, so over the course of 3 days, it rose to almost 24 MB. But that's just a guess right now.

(I'm using an AMD 2400xp, 1GB RAM, and XP Home, SP2)

I am delighted that you did not miss my point, good for you. The common denominator has always been windows and its given config. People use software, and different people use different software therefore any software or device and software combo is going to exhibit characteristics unique to the collective system.

Your scenario presented an almost perfect point because 15 meg doesn't seem like a lot by today standards, but thats still a huge amount of memory for the actual need.

It all comes down to expectations. If you supply hosting hardware such as you must with a magicjack in terms of cputime, then the overall quality of that host equipment is going to determine the end result. And we certainly can't ignore the quality of the net connection either.
