Incoming voice distortion
Everyone says they hear me just fine no matter where in the US I call, but they all sound like they are blowing bubbles when they talk. I can understand most of them except those who are loud talkers and they don't know how to talk softly. I'm really bent on making this work. I already canned my POTS with Qwest who I always felt are ripping us off with their monopoly. I have wireless internet with TCT West who use a 900 mhz system. I have tried MJ on my vista laptop and our P4 desktop with XP pro with the same results. They do not have Montana area codes so I got one from PA, so my sister can call me with a local number. At that time I knew of no reason to worry about a distant area code, but for that matter all of them are pretty distant from here.
I tried magicfix on both computers and got all good check marks. It ended up downloading some upgrade when I did it on the laptop. I did not pursue the MJ tech support because I read so much here and other places that they don't help very much. I have tried 4 different phones. Outgoing quality is excellent. My dish network does its nightly call without a hitch (one night I forgot to hook it up to the MJ and next day the dish complained). Haven't tried to FAX yet.
Tried the menu on the dialpad to lower volumn to 1/3. Even turned volumn to off and it did not have effect on telephone volumn. ??? no effect on the bubbles. There is no echo, just gurgling in voice. I get it when I call voicemail too. Switched to headset. High volumn = gurgled at high volumn. Off volumn = no sound. 1/3 volumn = gurgled at 1/3 volumn level.

Download and install this test program: http://tjnet.com/software/download/voip ... up1313.exe . Kill the MJ app with Task Manager, start the test program, press the Audio Test button, follow instructions, adjust Microphone and/or Speaker volume and repeat test if needed, report result.

I have the exact same problem and have done all you have done to rectify this situation. In frustration at 1 a.m. PST (after nearly 4 hours) I proceeded to dispute the integrity of MJ with my credit card company, it is now in effect. This was my last attempt to resolve the terrible customer service and perhaps receive some response from MJ regarding my issues. However, I was able to find a phone # on my statement that led me to MJ customer service at 561-594-2140. I called and the recording directed me to 281-404-1551 due to the time difference I will call again today. Hope that these numbers might help you as well. (Yet to be determined since I have not called yet).

Also: last night I left the MJ on the laptop and set it to not sleep. This AM the dish network had not complained of no continuous land line so I thought perhaps it had a good audio quality. Well......
I tried to make a call and it was the worst quality so far. I wonder if the dish cares, or perhaps only requires a dial tone??

Strangely, your problem sounds similar to one where someone has no audio at all.
Please make the following two test calls:
1. Call 8004377950 . I expect this to read a 585 number, but pay attention to the audio quality.
2. Call *678*004377950 . I expect this to read your MJ number. If my guess is correct, the quality will be much worse.
The actual number reached is the same, and the first part of the message "Thank you for calling the ..." should sound identical. If not, we have a codec problem which might be easy to fix.

Use Wireshark to capture a call (one of the above, or an actual conversation) and play it back. If the Wireshark playback is good, we will know that the data from the server is ok. Since we know from your previous test that the hardware works well, the intervening software must be at fault.
If the Wireshark playback is also bad, perhaps there is something strange with your Wireless Internet that doesn't show up at testyourvoip.com .

OK, so now please install Wireshark http://www.wireshark.org/ . Capture a call as described earlier, then play it back. If the capture is bubbly, your wireless modem or ISP is probably doing something weird -- there are analysis tools in Wireshark that can tell us what is going on. If the capture is clean, then some intervening software must be messing up the sound reaching the MJ app.

Yesterday I took the Vista laptop to the County Library to use their wifi and see how MagicJack performs on a different ISP. I got error 3 so I assume they may have it blocked. The IT guy was not there to ask. When I got home I plugged it back into the XP desktop and It acted very strange. My cpu was at a constant 100% and everything slowed to a crawl. I was pretty tired and should have wrote things down so I don't even remember what I did but I do know I got MJ working enough so that overnight Dish Network must have made its call. I should mention something about that. When the TV is on, my caller ID comes on the TV screen, showing the incoming phone #. Does anyone else get that?
Today I recorded a call to a friend with wireshark and incoming had bubbles outgoing did not. Same when played back. Source port [SIP] 5060, Dst port [vtsas] 5070.
I could use some help analyzing the data.

I sent you an email where you could send the capture. However, if the problem is really that some other app is using all the CPU time, then Wireshark is not the right tool. What is your CPU usage when MJ is not running? When it's running but idle "ready to call"? When you are on a call? In each case, approximately how much is used by magicJack.exe and how much by other apps? Can you identify another app that appears to be using excessive CPU?

Well, it's clear what is causing the trouble, not so clear if we can fix it:

Something (your ISP, your 900 MHz radio, your router) is badly reordering the incoming packets. As you can see, the packet with sequence # 115 is apparently missing from the stream, but then it appears 7 packets later, replacing another packet, in this case 123, which again gets grossly delayed. It would be unreasonable to expect MJ or any other VoIP product to work properly with this data.
I'm surprised that testyourvoip.com does not show the trouble. Perhaps it doesn't happen with those calls (because of different port numbers, etc.), or maybe this kind of impairment fools the test. If the former, there is probably a workaround. Otherwise, unless the trouble is in your gear or the ISP is willing to fix it, you may be out of luck.
Capture a testyourvoip run with Wireshark. Select the first RTP packet, go to menu item Statistics->RTP->Stream Analysis, click Reversed Direction (should show Analysing stream from (their server) to 192.168.1.x (your local IP) ).
If it looks good, we'll have to figure out what's different. If you see the same nonsense, try without the router. If still bad, post make/model of radio, whether it is configured as a router, any other data about your Internet connection that may be useful.

Ok, I bypassed the router and captured a testyourvoip call with the laptop and got the same wrong sequence. The radio is up on the roof, so will have to get my ladder and see if I can find a make and model. Since it's 900 mhz is it possible that there is a cordless telephone somewhere between here and the ISP's tower that would interfere somehow? I don't know what you mean about the radio being configured as a router. The radio connects to a power supply in the house where it's cat5 comes in. Then another cat5 goes to my Netgear 614 v4 router. Could the radio be a router too?
With the router reconnected for safety, try disabling your Zone Alarm. Though unlikely, possibly software is delaying the packets before Wireshark gets to see them.
I don't understand what's happening, but the testyourvoip capture shows the out-of-order packets as being delayed only 1 or 2 packet intervals, which most VoIP hardware or software can deal with, so the score it's giving is realistic. I'll look some more for a clue as to what may be different.

I disabled my firewall and recorded aTestYourVoip test. It also scrambled some packets like before. Why is it only incoming packets never outgoing?
I don't know how to find out if the WAN address of the router is a private address. They did say they don't give static IP addresses, if that tells you anything. They are the only ISP here that doesn't need a POTS.

If you log into your router at 192.168.1.1, there should be a status page that shows your WAN IP. The public IP starts with 216; a private address would start with 10, 192.168, or 172.[16-31] .
I thought of a couple of things that are easy to try and might help:
In regedit, navigate to HKCU\Software\talk4free\USB Softphone\Options\RTP . You should see an entry RtpJitterQueueLength with value 6 . Kill the MJ process, edit the value to A (hex), restart MJ, make a test call. This should increase the amount of jitter that MJ can handle; with luck it will now tolerate the reordered packets.
We can also try an alternate proxy. You are now registering with Philadelphia (because of the number you selected). Conceivably, the routing from there is taking multiple paths with different delays. Edit your hosts file (typically C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts ). Add a line that reads
Kill the MJ process, do a from a command prompt, restart MJ. It should now be using the Seattle proxy [67.88.218.6] and with luck your RTP will come from the Seattle media server [67.88.218.11] . You should be able to verify this using Wireshark.
Possibly, there is something wrong with your Ethernet NIC or driver -- try connecting wirelessly to your router (unplug the Ethernet) and it might sound better.
If none of the above help, please try to find another test location with a different ISP (a friend's, neighbor's, etc.)

I Just did this and although it changed to Seattle the packets were still disordered as before.
I have not tried to edit the registry yet as this is new to me and want to understand it better first. If Anyone can suggest some beginner info for this I will try it. I'm no chicken, just cautious.

Just got back from my friends place and the MJ worked fine over there. So now I'll have to deal with my ISP. I'm not sure what to think their problem is. A lot of folks here got them (TCT) so they can use vonage and say bye to Qwest. When TCT was here to install their radio they said they will soon have their own Voip. I wonder if they are doing something to the signal so we go with their VOIP.
If you haven't already done so, try rebooting the radio. If that doesn't help, note that out-of-order packets do not by themselves cause trouble. The problem arises when a packet arrives later than when it is scheduled to be played. What is "too late" depends on the size of the jitter buffer. In most cases, if packet N arrives after N+1 or even after N+2 (as was happening with testyourvoip), the stream will play correctly. When it's e.g. after N+7, you have trouble. If we knew why the cases are different, we could probably fix it.

You might try your MJ at a friend's who also has TCT. If it works ok there, maybe your radio is defective or has old firmware. If it fails the same way, and you choose a friend who knows XP well, he could help you safely try the registry edit.

Early on in this adventure I had rebooted the radio and at another time the router with no improvement.I will try it again now. Earlier you asked for the Radio make, model, etc. It quit raining so I can get up on the roof and see if I can get them if that could help us.
I wonder if a proxy in Denver would work better. Is there a way to see where my internet comes in from? A drop point?

If your SM (subscriber module) is set up as a router, your router will have a private WAN IP and you should be able to access the SM at that address. If your router gets a public IP, the SM will have a separate private IP for admin; it's probably easiest to get this address from the ISP. Depending on how your ISP's routers are set up, you may need to bypass your router and configure the PC with a second IP address to access the SM. Canopy units can have two passwords, one for read-only access and one to modify the config. Unless you're friendly with the ISP's engineering staff, they probably won't give you the full access password, but they should be willing to give you the read-only one. If you're lucky, a password won't be needed for read only access. There are lots of statistics available and you should be able to tell if the delayed packets are being retransmitted or have encountered some other error. IMO, you should try to test your MJ at another location served by the same ISP. If that works fine, you'll have a better case to complain, and you'll better know what to look for. If it's not so good, we can try to see if the degradation is intentional and if there is a workaround.
Regarding the registry edit that you tried, it should not have affected the Wireshark trace at all. The idea is for the softphone to tolerate more reordering, at the expense of greater latency. So you will need to listen and compare. Note that 10 decimal is hex A; 11 decimal is hex B. I did not have a way to test actual jitter tolerance, but did verify that a setting of hex A seemed to give the longest delay.
You can ping the various proxies to see which have the shortest delays, then put the IP address of the one you want into the hosts file.

Thanks for the info. I have been having to work overtime this week so probably won't get to this for a few days. None of my friends are using TCT or MJ yet. They are waiting to see if I can get it working right. When I can catch up with the IT guy that does the libraries and schools he may know some I can ask to try MJ on their system. He has mentioned that he helped some folks here to get vonage working at their homes, and they had TCT. I don't know but mabey he has it at his house.

I found that my MJ connected to the Seattle proxy via Denver, so I changed to the Denver one to see what that would do. Right after I did that, before I could make a test call MJ started some kind of upgrade. When it finished I made the test call and it connected through the original Philidelphia proxy 71.5.113.11. I checked the hosts file and the Denver IP address was there.

Well, at times like this I start to doubt myself, so I triple checked and the host file has 207.155.164.198 proxy1.philadelphia.talk4free.com
and to be sure I did another ipconfrig /flushdns without the 'r'.
Then recorded another call and it does appear to be going through Philly. I will try to e-mail the capture to you.

I got the capture file, but the INVITE had already been sent (to Philadelphia proxy) before capturing started (first SIP packet is 183 Session Progress). So, one cannot see what DNS name was looked up, if any. it's conceivable that your config file has a numeric IP for the proxy, though the files for my accounts all use hostnames of the form proxy1.xxxx.talk4free.com .

After all those gyrations you went through, the voice distortion was a hardware problem with your ISP tower, and not with MJ.
Is your phone now working without the distortion?
I've had the same distortion for over a month. MJ Tech Chat is a complete waste of time, the personnel must be in another country, they certainly don't understand English. I can't get any help from MJ so I'm thinking of giving up on MJ and trying Ooma.
I'm in NYC and using RCN as my broadband supplier.

Phone still working well without the distortion. It works as good as any of the voips I've been around. However I tried testyourvoip.com again since the ISP did the repair and my voice quality improved and got less than a 3. That makes me wonder how accurate that test is. I got better test results there when I had the distortion.
One thing I have to say: WWW.speakeasy.net gave me some really low numbers for my download speed. I am not sure why this was not sufficient to handle the 100kbps I've heard MJ needs unless my antivirus or firewall or something else uses the bandwidth up. Now when I use WWW.speakeasy.net I get about 1300 kbps. So did the technician from my ISP when he was here using his laptop. Before they fixed the problem at thier tower it was about 500 kbps. Have you checked this?

The ISP fix worked only temporary. They have been out here a lot this past year and the out of sequence packet problem continued for the most part. After my contract ended in May I switched to the cable company. Since then I still have distortion, although less. Wireshark shows that packets are being dropped (aprox .75% of them) but as before only those that are incoming. There is this improvement: The packets are now in order, without exception. Only that some are lost. This seems to happen at the worst time when someone says a number or some other important syllable and I have to ask them to repeat it. The outgoing audio works fine. I have change the proxy to Denver with no improvement. I bypassed my router and there was no improvement. Disabled Zonealarm and that had no effect on the packet loss.
I don't know if Stewart is out there but if anyone has ideas I am listening. Incoming packet loss.
