Incoming "Not a working number"

Post by slingblayd »

I got my MJ yesterday and installed it and all the upgrades including the one for vista which I am using. My problem that I can not receive incoming calls. When I try to call myself all I get is a standard AT&T message of "The number you have dialed is not a working number, please check the number and dial again" I have tried calling myself with 3 different lines(2 cells and one regular land line) and get the same voice message from all.

After 5 attempts with tech support, I did not get a solution or a good answer on this issue. they keep having me restart and unplug it and moving USB ports to reset but it doesnt help. They get to a point where they realize they cant help and the chat mysteriously ends from their end, lol, Can anybody help?

I should also mention I can make outgoing calls fine and even get the correct incoming caller ID number, which MJ assigned me in the 925 area code.

It is on magicjacks end, probably a routing table problem. You need to contact someone like Richard Bone at MJ to resolve this.

Your first line should be to email Dan Borislow, his email is floating around here somewhere.

I had the same problem. Tech support was clueless.

The problem disappeared after a day or so.

I would suspect that the problem is actually not a MJ problem but that your phone company has not yet added the a new prefix to their switch. The phone companies are bringing new prefixes on so fast right now that many switches have a lag. The prefix is the second three digits, eg AAA-PPP-NNNN where AAA is the area code etc.

If you post what your area and prefix are, we do not need the last four, I can look it up and see when it went live.

MJ often uses VERY new ones

I had the same issue with no incoming calls with my MJ . I also went thru all the same attempts to get it working . Tech support was very nice and tried to help resolve the issue ,but they got it fixed ounce and then after 2 calls it quit working again . I changed my area code and my MJ is workking fine now for several days . The area code i was using when i was having trouble was 419 . When i changed to area code to 601 it has worked fine . I have no complaints with MJ at all and have nothing but good to say about the product /service . Most of the bashing people are doing about MJ is not fair because People are blaming MJ for issues that is not MJs fault .
By the way . Changing area codes was my idea alone . MJ did not requist ,advise or even mention changing area codes .
Hope this helps .

Thanks rick and enotz and to all others that replied, I did a bit of investigating and decided to try a number change based on your suggestions. I still chose the area code I wanted but went with a prefix I know for a fact is an active prefix in my area. It took all of 2 minutes to do that and with in 2 and a half minutes I was up and running great on both received and dialed calls.

I guess by doing that all I am out is my one time free number change but I'm not too concernd with that.

I also sent off emails to Dan and Richard who by the time they read my emails everything on my end was fine, and did get responses from both.

My biggest concern is with the live MJ tech chat though, it seems to be such a easy and simple solution to what apears to be an inactive or not yet active assigned prefix. Their chat was obviously scripted and they didnt seem to have a handle on what I was trying to get across and pretty much just kept insiting on changeing ports and restarting even tho I was 99% sure the problem was not with my computer or how the unit was installed.

Other then than that I'm looking forward to giving this a fair shot and for $20 a year I dont see how I could go wrong, heck I just spent more then that on this afternoons beer, lol. Again thanks to all.

I had the same problem on both of my magicjacks at the same time about 3 to 4 days ago. Logged into customer service. Rep asked for my magicjack numbers. Once she had the numbers she said to restart the magicjacks. That fixed the problem and they have both worked fine since then. Makes me think is was magicjack configuration problem that was easily reset. Took no more than 10 minutes.
