Problems calling 800 numbers that need to know location...

Post by trailmix »

I can't call numbers such as 800-204-2400 or 888-892-2253. They attempt to identify where you are calling from. Because I am using Magicjack, they appear to think I am calling from outside my home state, even though my Magicjack number is within my home state. Therefore, they reject my call. Anyone noticed this phenomeon or know how to fix it? I tried dialing with the on-screen keypad also, no luck.

It appears as though MagicJack has started using some bargain-basement route providers. Often these providers do not forward correct caller ID info. I don't think there is anything you can do about it except to let MagicJack know about it. There is a related thread called "Wrong phone number" below yours.

Well the odd thing is when I call someone else their Caller ID does show my correct Magicjack phone number, so it's not quite the same problem as the "Wrong Phone Number" thread. And those two 800 numbers have never worked.. it's not an intermittent type of thing

Yes, I would assume that your caller ID would work correctly on some routes. The way many VOIP providers set things up is for different area code calls to go out on different provider trunks to incur the least cost. While calls to 800 numbers may be routed through one carrier, calls to other area codes may be routed through different carriers depending on cost. It's also possible that MagicJack doesn't send out ANI information. Either way, the only way to fix it will be to contact tech support.

Ah, I forgot to mention that I have been dealing with MagicJack tech support on this issue for a few weeks now with no resolution. They always tell me that someone will investigate and email me back within 24 hours, and I never get an email. Has anyone ever received an email response from MJ tech support? Just wondering if there is a precedent. They also usually say they can't find my chat log so I have to rehash the whole problem every time, it's like an endless cycle.

I called 1-800-204-2400 and got number could not be reached from your calling area ...... 2cy
However, I call 800-204-2400 and get 24hr Fitness in Las vegas.

I call 1-888-892-2253 and I get customer care for Time Warner Cable of S. California. Because you are calling from out of state .... blah blah blah.
I call 888-892-2253 and get the same thing.

Good tip. I had no idea there could be a difference if you use a 1-800 or 800. I'll try that tonight. Thanks. In both cases, I can just call them from my cell phone, but its an annoyance that I'd like to fix for the future.

OK both numbers work fine now. Either my endless requests to tech support were finally answered or it just resolved on its own. I also emailed Dan Borislow at his AOL and Magicjack emails and never got a response but maybe he pushed it through to get fixed. Thanks all.

FWIW, have you looked at this?

I found it useful when trying to pay my electric bill over the phone from my MJ. For some reason, the 800# won't accept the call from MJ unless I use the *.

Same Here!! After I just got done praising Mj in a post on here this morning I now have the problem with toll free numbers. I just tried calling numbers with and without the 1 in front-some go through some don't. One was to Qwest because I have their dsl and I had to use my cell phone to call them. They said the problem was the voip and I'm real sure the guy was laughing about it, I will send the owner Dan this whole page as well as two of his tech support people. The main support guy is real good about getting things fixed. Last time I had a problem he had it fixed in one day. So, keep posting if it dosen't get fixed.

They emailed me and said that the 800 numbers should now work-well some do some don't and the other toll free prefix like 888 and 877 don't work. All I'm getting is a busy signal-They go through fine using my cell. I'd say I'm getting maybe 50% of toll free calls working-I need them all.
