Well I caught that little b*gger ET dialing home this morning... The Vtech does have a Redial, there does not appear to be a re-dial on busy, at least I couldn't find any mention in the manual. So I did as Vaham suggested and reset the phone. Got up at some un-godly hour to start Net Mon.... and waited. Right on cue at 6:40 am ET does his thing, so here is what happens....
MJ softphone shows "Ready to Call". The number 7312139 appears in the field below End & Send. Window above End & Send shows the number and operational and the call timer. Phone shows "In Use" message on handset. After 46secs the softphone returns to it's "Ready To Call" and the number 7312139 appears in the call log. A few seconds go by and it starts again. The dial out happened 8 times, calls last for either 46 or 27 secs and then hangup and then it's all over with for another day. I don't know if this is relevant, we haven't had 7 digit dialing in FL for a few years now, it's 10 digit even for local calls.
Anyway, being a noobie I do not know what the etiquette is regarding posting a 4MB attachment here so I won't... I haven't had chance to look at the capture yet as work sometimes gets in the way of interesting things, so if anyone wants a copy of the capture to take a look at then just PM me here with your email address and I will happily send it. It really was kinda weird watching it happen......

You might not want to broadcast your MJ phone number out to the world.......it shows in your pix of your softphone.

NP.....I've seen a few ppl that have posted their SP images on here and forgot to blank out their numbers and addy's.

Still curious is to how your Vtech phone seems to try to communicate with your MJ and why at just that one time of the day. Wierd.

I hope Vtech have a Tech Support line because this could be really entertaining
I guess I can sort of understand a phone dialing out, something has got corrupted on a PCB, I just CANNOT figure out why it's at 6:40 each morning...

ANYONE WANT TO BUY A VTECH PHONE ???????

Is that number in the Vtech? In other words after this happens can you press the redial button and see that number come up on the phone itself. At least in mine when you press the redial button the last number dialed shows up on the handset's display.

Are you sure you don't have a tivo, alarm system or some other device on the phone line?

Vaham, I will check that when I get home tonight.

MagicJacked, the Vtech base is connected directly into the MJ, it's not through the phone jacks in the house, though I don't have Tivo (still running with that NEW technology, what do they call it...hmm VCR :D ). Good thought, though.

And so the Saga ends....

Post by rictic »

Vaham, the number doesn't show on the redial list on the phone handset. I looked at the data capture and I am no expert in deciphering network traffic, there was nothing that looked weird at least not to a total novice like me. So I had a couple of options :-
1. Call TAPS like lonestarmagic suggested way back.
2. Call Vtech support just for the fun of it and risk being picked up by a bunch of big blokes in a white van with a straight jacket.
3. Take the thing out to a quiet spot near the Everglades and unleash a whole heap o' kick-@ss on it.
So what did I do, well, like the consumer that I am, I took it back to Target and told them it didn't work properly and got a new one. Ask me what brand I got this time, go on ask. Well, I got another VTECH DECT 6.0.
And so the saga begins.........

I am too late.

I was going to ask if the Vtech phone has a clock. If so, change the time by 12 hours and it should start calling at a more convenient time.

Good luck with your new phone. A few days ago I bought an AT&T DECT 6.0 phone with 6 handsets. After 2 days the batteries are still warm. I think they are being over charged.

It will be interesting to see if you have the same problem with the new phone. What had my curiosity peaked is that the 46 seconds is the amount of time MJ waits after detecting a 7 digit dial and issuing a message. If you dial that same number a second time you get a different message from MJ and again a 46 second timeout. I did not see the 27 second timeout here. I was beginning to wonder if in fact MJ may actually be performing the dial out as some method of detecting service. Weird that it would not occur with a corded phone but did with the vTech. I was wondering if the ringer equivalence somehow triggered MJ to behave differently.

Oh well unless your new phone behaves the same we may never know what was really going on.

Whatever the deal was with that phone.....just be glad it wasn't calling 911.....that could have become costly if they would have charged you for each mistaken call.

Are you 100% sure that phone was new when you bought it? It could have been bought by someone else, then returned to the store......could have been used in a wrongful manner.....a murder or something like that and the person is trying to contact you via these wierd calls from 'beyond' :)

Who knows......you may have been able to make some $$ in contacting TAPS and have them do a study on it. :)

Not true. At least in Parkville, MD. My nabour's DSL line was calling 911 alot. The DSL line has a phone line that they did not know about or use. No phone attached. The cops must have come to the house 20 times. Finally Verizon fixed the problem from outside. I don't know what was wrong, seems odd that an empty line could make calls. 911 said that could hear random tones like someone pushing the buttons. Anyway, no fees!

I can't spell nabour. At least is looks wrong to me.

They are supposed to start charging here, but the idea has only been discussed.

Years ago, my uncle in CA had a wine celler with an alarm connected. Every time the temp would go above a few deg. it triggered the alarm and the fire department responded. After the second time, he was charged for the false alarms.

I figure, if someone kept calling 911 and there was no answer from the calling party and if the line stayed open long enough for the dispatcher to get a fix on the location, they could have sent units out to the house....if it continued, a fine could have been imposed. Just guessing, but wouldn't want to test the idea. :D

I believe that in FL they charge you for bogus 911 calls, so I'm glad it wasn't 911. I'm glad it didn't go through to soeone's number cause that really could have p*ssed off some poor folks being called at 6:40 each morning... The phone looked to be brand new the bags etc were all still sealed. Anyway the new phone which is exactly the same model doesn't dial out, I'd been away for the week-end but I got up at 6:30 this morning just to check on the new phone and no dialing out. I was actually kinda disappointed, I was getting used to my funky phone. Oh well.... It must have been that one particular phone. I should have really kept the phone and bought a new one. It could have been interesting to pull it apart. Who knows Target may just re-package it and pass it on to some other unsuspecting Magic Jack user. I guess we'll never know the full story behind that phone.......
