I cut off my home phone service with AT&T, confident Magic Jack would replace the service with the same reliability WITHOUT the cost. Well I now have a strange problem.
I have three computers; two XP desktops with processors over 2 MHZ and over 386 MB of RAM. I then have a Gateway laptop factory loaded with Vista. One of the desktop is the host computer and the other desktop and laptop are on the internet via a Linksys router attached to an RCA modem with Comcast 6 MEG internet service.
Initially I plugged up the Magic Jack to the desktop receiving the wireless signal. No problem installing, but immediately after, all kinds of connection issues. Dial tone still in effect while dialing, choppy dial tone, losing dial tone constantly, having to repeatedly unplug magic jack or restart computer to get a clean dial tone again and even receive or make a "clean" call.
Frustrated, I moved the magic Jack to the host computer and had the same problems, however, I noticed one thing. If I dialed from the softpad on the computer I could make calls, but if I tried to pick up the phone and make the call, I get a dial tone while dialing. Outside of that I still had the same problems with a new one. If I unplug the Magic Jack to reset it, that action would lock up the computer.
Decided to plug the magic jack into my Vista laptop and now have NONE of the problems other than the fact I move around with my laptop and cannot afford to have a phone constantly attached to it.
Can someone please tell me why I have success with Vista and not with my XP desktops when ALL the computers are using the same service?
Oh, one observation. On my XP desktops, there are 5 profiles. I notice that whenever each person goes into their profile and programs are running each, the magic Jack acts up. It's as if it cannot compete with multiple profiles running programs in the background, programs that are video games with constant bandwidth being used with characters moving around on the screen. On my Vista laptop, I am the only user and all I do is visit news sites and bulletin boards. The magic Jack stays steady and no problems.
Thoughts? Explanations? You see, when i take my [vista] laptop with me, I want to know the XP computers and be relied on to maintain the magic jack service so i can call home to check on the family.

2) Are you also using a cordless phone?
(Some 2.4Ghz phones interfere with wifi, which could cause problems.)

Well I think I was having a similar problem with my non portable phone at the XP computer. Then again, I was using it with my two portable phones also in the equation. I'm going to plug up the non portable phone by itself and see if she holds steady.
I've had the non portable phone connected to my Vista laptop for the entire day and not one dropped call, loss of dial tone, static, choppy dial tone or anything.

"C:\Documents and Settings\<yourname>\Application Data\mjusbsp\magicJack.exe" /foreground /lf log.txt /scf _magicJackPersonalDataRoot "F:\magicJack"This will log (LOTS) of info to the file log.txt. See if you see anything relevant in there.
Also, I had problems with the USB extension cable. Once I stopped using the extension cable all was well. Also, sometimes trying other USB ports on the same PC help.
Post back your results, and we can go from there.

You can still download the echo canceler directly from tjnet.com.
Google cache has it or you can get it from archive.org
Though, as saxman pointed out, this is only for the TigerJet 560C... newer magicJacks have echo canceling built in.
