Changing The MagicJack Proxy Server Setting In Windows Vista

Saw this on another post and was wondering how to modify this setting. I run Windows
Vista Home Premium:

Now that magicJack has implemented a DNS entry for the proxy server address, it is possible to change the proxy server you use. This can be done in the by pointing the proxy address in the windows hosts file.

For Example:

If your magicJack is pointing to the following proxy:
proxy1.nashville.talk4free.com

and you want to change it to:
proxy1.newyork.talk4free.com

Ping proxy1.newyork.talk4free.com to get the IP address
67.106.135.70

Now just add the folowing entry to your windows hosts file
67.106.135.70 proxy1.nashville.talk4free.com

Note: magicJack has many proxy servers to choose using the following naming order:
proxy1.{city}.talk4free.com

You'll have to be an administrator to modify the HOSTS file.

First go to "C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\" & right-click on the file - HOSTS , click properties and clear the read-only checkbox at the bottom, if it isn't already. Click OK.

Then open Notepad as an Administrator, (type Notepad in the Start search box, right-click, Run as administrator), & click File, then Open.
Type C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\HOSTS in the filename field, click OK.

Add the entry you want (i.e. 67.106.135.70 proxy1.nashville.talk4free.com ) on its own line. Click File, Save, and then exit.

If, for instance, i'm going to use the New York IP address, I have to replace the ????????
with NewYork in the "proxy1.????????.talk4free.com" statement, correct?

Also, will I need to reboot after this change?

No, the proxy1.????????.talk4free.com statement is the location MJ is trying to connect to. The point is to fool your system into substituting the location you want. You do that by telling your system that "proxy1.????????.talk4free.com" is located at 67.106.135.70 which is really the New York location's address. I'm not sure how to know exactly which proxy your individual MJ is requesting, but it seems that nashville is the standard.
Which gets you the Hosts entry of 67.106.135.70 proxy1.nashville.talk4free.com from your original post.

If you would like to switch to a different proxy you'll have to find it's address. To do that open a command window and type ping proxy1.????????.talk4free.com then press enter. On the lines that appear afterward you'll see a set of numbers like xx.xxx.xxx.xx or so. That's the # you want to redirect MJ to.

If you have a router, most of them have logging capabilites. Turn on your logging. Connect your magicJack. View to outbound log file to see what connections it has made.
