One simple twist to improve MJ voice quality significantly..

Post by samba »

Plug MJ to a computer/laptop that is wired by an ethernet cable to the router. That way, your internet connection is not subjected to radio/magnetic interferences from microwave, other electronic devices (cordless phones, medical devices, power lines, etc..), other physical obstructions (wall, beam, etc...).

After the change, my MJ gives excellent voice quality almost 100% of the times.

Hope this helps.

yeah, I've found the bandwidth isn't as important as smooth flowing data, without it spirting on and off.

The bandwidth helps if you're also surfing at the time you talking to someone.

I just have 1Mb/s (mega-bIT, not Byte) bandwidth and with even that slow a connection, when the data stream is smooth flowing, it works perfectly, but if the data stream starts to sputter, start/stop, or just crawl, of course, the MagicJack suffers.

so ... yeah! .. you're right, anything you can do to keep the data-stream smooth will work better.

Yes its basic, and knowing that you should have read it and just moved on. I know about this already but I wouldn't post a useless comment like your previous one just to make a point.

hey all , is this about my post here?

:)

if so, yeah, I know it's basic,
it's meant to be, 'cause you need basic to start out anything with :D

always go back to the basics, when something doesn't work as it should,
to find out what's going wrong.

sometimes , it's the little things that screw-up something,
sometimes, it's something basic, and not complex

Well, I don't take this personal at all. Remember, there are lot of people without technical background don't recognize the fact that internet wireless connections are subjected to radio interferences. So they naturally complain if their MJs voice quality are not good as they should be. This "wired" solution should fix 99% of the cases.

So, instead of being bitter, please don't. Everyone would be happier if we positively contribute to the forum.

Happy posting.

You say router so are you saying to use a router instead of just the modem?
Unfortunately, MJ has been having issues (cutting out, bad audio) so I'd like to fix it. Surprisingly, Skype has been doing better but it's not as cheap.

I bought a D-Link EBR-2310 wired router for around $20 to connect multiple pc's to my cable modem and I found that the embedded QoS routine which boosts the priority of VOIP packets significantly improved my audio quality.

installing the free version of Zone Alarm firewall greatly improved the ability of others to hear what I was saying.

Thank you for the advice. IF not for the so-called "basic shit," I wouldn't be able to follow many technology forums, e-zines, manuals, and tutorials at all, I had to learn how to do everything I do by myself, without help from anyone except people who take the time to share the basics and so-forth on forums like this, and tutorials they write in a non-technical format. Why do people waste time responding to lowlifes like that one, it just makes them think we actually care what they think or say?

If you only have one computer, can one still install a router? Besides the reason listed in this thread about sound quality and running a browser for a background flow of data while speaking on your MJ enabled phone, what else could one stand to gain by putting a router between their computer and cable modem? SIP access? Monitoring of bandwidth consumption for Comcast and others bandwidth caps? Help me out please, any other reasons? ... and of course that is if it's even possible to install a router with just one computer, just trying to make up excuses to use one. Does anyone else use a router and only have one computer and no other bandwidth/internet consuming/connecting devices?
thanks

You can use a router with only one PC. It would provide additional protection from the bad things running around the Internet, especially if you aren't using any other type of firewall.
