I Cannot Make Calls: It is saying to please call 2148845142?
This is my second problem with my magic jack when i try to call any number. Here is what it will do before the recording:
*** when u dial a number is will prompt you with CREATING AN OUTGOING CALL [00:00]
*** then it will change to TRYING [00:00]
*** then it will change to OPERATIONAL [00:01]
then the recording:
"Thank u for calling due to unusual call volumes on your phone please call 214-884-5142 to receive an important update"
But I can receive calls. I never had problems when someone calls me. can you please help me? I think we all know that magic jack customer service are not customer service as we want them to be. To help you here are the
Trouble shooting steps that I have done:
1. power cycle the computer and the modem for 2 mins.
2. updated the magic jack on its website.
3. unplug the magic jack for 5 mins and plugged it to a different USB port.
4 i tried calling the number 214-884-5142 but when i call the number it said "Thank u for calling due to unusual call volumes on your phone please call 214-884-5142 to receive an important update"
5. i tried calling other phone numbers with the *67 before the area code
example *676*461234567 still did not work.
6. i have tried using the phone and the magic jack pad on my computer to call and none works.
Please Help ME! I had this magic jack for 10 months and I never has this problem before.

SAME PROBLEM
it happened to me a lot of times this week, what i did was reset my laptop several times, unplug the magicjack from the port then put it on again, it seemed to work after several tries but now while i was talking with somebody on the other line it suddenly cut off and i tried calling back but i can't. this happened about 3 hours ago and still i cant make calls now. i can receive calls though. what is happening? pls we need help...
Re: SAME PROBLEM
Is everyone experiencing this problem a heavy user? It's been reported that MJ is cutting off people who use too much time.neoplasm wrote:what is happening? pls we need help...

I'm not sure the above is true. But, it's oddly coincident with the message you three are receiving.

Re: SAME PROBLEM
Yes. I chatted with the support agents and the only advice they are giving me is to call the number above. I asked them why I need to call the number all they are telling me is they are not authorized with the type of problem that I am having and it is just best for me to call that number so my problem will be fixed. When ever I call the number it is saying to call back on a later time.az2008 wrote:Is everyone experiencing this problem a heavy user? Yes I have tried several times unplug and replug the magic jack but I still cannot make it work I have been trying to call the number every hour and still no answer so I do not know that to do.
@az2008 - Thanks.
I have read some comments from this site:

""""Chris on June 29th, 2008 4:55 pm
Beware of Magicjack !!!!
They claim unlimited use, but look at section 6 of the terms of service. it reads…..
If magicJack sees excessive use or systematic or intentional misuse, it reserves the right, in our sole discretion, to terminate your use of the magicJack device and/or Software immediately, and you will not be entitled to get a refund of any licensing fee or any other fee you may have paid to us.
Excessive use is not defined and the online customer service chat is in my opinion, USELESS!
They would not give me a straight answer to what constitutes “excessive use” instead they just kept talking about refunds and refering me to the terms of use page.""""

CHRIS IS CORRECT!!!! I only wished I had read his comments before renewing my contract for the second year.
I want to warn others as well. Chris is correct about their “Terms of Service” - notably section 6 “Proper use” here http://www.magicjack.com/9/faq/
I had been using MagicJack since August 2007 to make “unlimited” calls to my girlfriend 3000 miles away (now wife). As of October 23, 2008, I received my recorded “Dear John” msg from MagicJack. Calling out gave me the following msg: “Thank you for calling. Due to unusual call volume on your phone, please call 214-884-5124 to receive an important update.” The gist being that I had “breached” their terms of service.
Like Chris, I could not get them to define “excessive use”. Now I have a limited service where I can continue receiving “free” calls, however I can only make outgoing calls by purchasing minutes through them. Since I had renewed my service over 30 days ago, I was not eligible for a full refund according to Andrew, the customer service guy. I asked for a physical address to write an official complaint letter and here it is for all of you who have been jilted by MagicJack:
MagicJack Customer Service
P.O. Box 6846
West Palm Beach, Florida 33405
So much for my happy honeymoon with MagicJack.
SERIOUSLY THOUGH, the phone service was just okay. Phone conversations were intermittent with beeps, clicks and static throughout my use. It was cheap….but if you make frequent calls to, say, your significant other, expect a “Dear John” msg from MagicJack and a useless castrated service afterwards."""""
~~~~I have not yet really spoken with any magic jack agents cause as I have said I cannot contact them since when ever I call them it seems to me like they do not want to do business cause no one picks up the phone. But anyway I think this will help some of use have an idea on whats really going on. So?? anyone having the same problem as I am? please fell free to post it.
Thank you.
i purchased some international credits, dialed an international number (i followed the instructions - starting with the international code 011 then the country code and the area code...), and i still get the dial tone. so im thinking maybe it isnt about using up too many minutes since it goes the same for international calls even if i already have enough credit to make an international call. this is getting weirder and weirder by the minute. wish i had gotten vonage instead.
One person who received the "excessive use" termination said he was offered to purchase domestic long distance for 1-cent per minute.neoplasm wrote:how can you purchase additional minutes from them?
It's odd how these reports began this week. With a worsening economy and capital markets drying up, makes me wonder if MJ is being affected somehow. Maybe unable to fund network upgrades? Doing what it can to extend the life of its existing network? A surge in sales as people lose their jobs and look for ways to cut expenses?
I don't mind that "unlimited" doesn't mean unlimited. But, MJ should publish what it considers to be excessive use (i.e., what's "unlimited" for normal users). It seems like there should be a warning system in place too. A way to check your usage.
Mark
i dunno if a miracle happened just a minute ago when i restarted my laptop since i had to install a windows update, but i can now make calls like i used to. im not sure if this has something to do with my purchasing credits last night, so i just tried not to make my conversation long. i checked my credits at my.magicjack.com and the amount i bought wasnt subtracted yet. ill just check back later today if the minutes i got when i made that call today were actually "paid" minutes or that there was just some glitch in their system.
Please keep us up to date with your story. Can you receive calls?
Many services have the same type of language with their TOS that allow termination of service for 'excessive' use but will never define 'excessive'. Cricket wireless and their broadband wireless come to mind. As do many of the broadband providers.
Perhaps this will become the cheapest$40/yr service and forward calls from our old number to our new MJ as we buy a new one every year or so. I hope not. I paid for the extra years.
yes i can receive calls. what happened the whole day yesterday was that i could npt make outgoing calls at all, but i can receive incoming calls. now it's working fine like it used to. purchased credits for international calls last night out of desperation , im not sure if that was what made me make outgoing calls now but when i looked up my available credits after i made the call nothing was subtracted.
and yes i can say that i am a heavy user, i have my mj for almost three months now, and i just encountered this problem starting last week. im currently out of the country so im using mj to communicate with my boyfriend in LA so u can imagine the minutes i am using. but sometimes it's him who makes the calls from his cellphone.
if mj can just hold off any mysterious happenings till i get back to LA in 2 weeks then ill be fine and im back to my unlimited cellphone plan and timewarner homephone.
Do you mind estimating the minutes you've used recently? I'm curious what MJ's trigger is. I'd like to get an idea if it's closer to two hours per day (3600 minutes per month), or eight hours (14400 minutes per month).neoplasm wrote:and yes i can say that i am a heavy user, i have my mj for almost three months now, and i just encountered this problem starting last week. im currently out of the country so im using mj to communicate with my boyfriend in LA so u can imagine the minutes i am using.
i would say it averaged around 4-5 hours a day the first month i got it, then for the past month it lessened to about more or less 2 hours a day...az2008 wrote:Do you mind estimating the minutes you've used recently? im beginning to feel its like some sort of a fever that comes and goes, since it happened again yesterday, after i shut down my laptop for a couple of hours. im thinking there must be something wrong with its server since i cant make international calls either even if i have bought credits. then all of a sudden i can make calls again late last night, just when i decided to give that getting another number a try. now im scared shit to turn my laptop off, cuz that thing might happen again.
i also noticed that magicjack's advertisement on the left side of their screen on the softphone is gone and its taking me about a minute to get through a call. i have no problems with my incomings.
what is happening? is this dan's way of saying "trick or treat"?
I am going crazy
I have this same problem and have not been able to get around it. I have "chatted" with 12 different people and gotten 12 different responses - everything from "it is a virus" to "our engineers are working on it" to "it is because you have made too many calls" even though their website states "make all the free calls you please. " My only choice is apparently to complain to VISA, get my money back and never use this company again. You cannot even call the %$#@ number because the mailbox is full.
Like everyone else in this thread, I'm stuck with this problem.
I just renewed my MJ service about a month and a half ago. I use my MJ maybe 2hrs/day (maybe 1hr/day on the weekends). However, my wife had a set of business meetings a couple weeks ago and she was on the phone for 36 hours over a period of 2 days. Right after that, I got the "Due to unusual call volumes on your phone..." message, and can't get rid of it.
I've Live Chatted a ton (they are useless). I've called the number (no one ever answers and you cannot leave a message). And I've even asked for a refund via Live Chat (was told that the billing department would e-mail me in 24-48hrs and I would receive a refund in 3-5 business days - but that was a week ago and I haven't received an e-mail OR a refund).
Has anyone made ANY progress on this issue yet?
You said your wife used the phone for 36 hours over two days. That's 2160 minutes. You also said you just renewed (at $20 per year). If you divide 2160 into $20, you just got 36 hours of time at less than a penny per minute. Is it really worth the hassle to spend time with dead chat trying to get a refund?daveleone wrote:And I've even asked for a refund
I'm not trying to justify MJ's actions. I think they should publish their criteria (and provide a usage meter on your account homepage).
I think they should also offer a top-off option so people can pay more and keep their service. Cutting people off seems bad. (And, I think people deserve a pro-rated refund under that condition. But, from a cost/benefit perspective, I wouldn't spend any time on it unless I was unemployed, had nothing else to do, etc.).
Thanks for posting the specifics about what probably led to this event. Other people have been light on details. Between what you and someone else described, it sounds like 1500 to 2000 minutes per month is the trigger.
Dave,
Mark is absolutely correct. They should be advising customers of the usage ceiling and providing a way to monitor the usage. Those of you who are being punished for using the service as advertised have a legitimate gripe. But is it worth your time?
Have you tried changing your number on the website? Might be that they tracked usage by number and not device. Good luck.
What seems strange to me is that you'd think heavy users would be an opportunity to sell a "preferred" tier and get another $20 out of them (for 4000 minutes per month). Discarding them seems like bad business.cdwaldron wrote:Those of you who are being punished for using the service as advertised have a legitimate gripe.
I don't know how other VOIP providers handle that. They all have limits. Maybe the others shut people down without spending time renegotiating. Maybe it's not economical dealing with the economies of scale that they do.
Mark & Chuck -
Yeah, I definitely agree with everything you're saying.
In particular - if MagicJack wanted to cut me off, I wish I had been aware upfront of the usage limits, and I wish they had simply been honest and told me 'Your account has been terminated for over-use" rather than giving me the run-around for days and sending me to an unmanned 'support' phone number.
As for 'getting a good deal for my money'. Yes, I think MJ has been a great deal for me for the past year and 1 month (even at $60 total). But it's just the principle of the thing. You don't just cut off someone's phone service without providing them a way to remedy the problem. That's just ridiculous.
Ideally, I'd like to get my service working again if there were a way. In the absence of that, I've pretty much given up.
P.S. I tried to change my phone number and it says "You cannot change your number at this time."
That kind of sucks though. He has to buy another USB dongle. 36 hours for $20 didn't look too bad. But, for $40 it's not quite as attractive. He could probably get the same deal with a pay-as-you-go service like voipvoip.com. And no risk of having the plug pulled on him with no warning.HolmanGT wrote:But just buy another MJ and you'll be good to go for another year.
And, like he said, there's the principle of the issue. It is pretty rude what they're doing. The way it started suddenly makes me wonder if it's not related to business conditions. An urgent action to reduce usage because financing for upgrades fell apart? That's not unreasonable considering the credit markets recently. That would make me reluctant to plow more money into MJ.
I still think MJ is a great deal. I have no principles.
2000 minutes is consistent with what I've heard. Someone in the industry said 3000 minutes is average, and he's heard MJ is well below this because they charge less to begin with.[1]
What I'm concerned about is whether calls to 800 numbers count toward the limit. I might spend some time on conference call bridges. And, could have a big marathon occasionally. I've heard Skype's pay-as-you-go service doesn't charge for 800 numbers. (I tried vbuzzer.com and they didn't debit my account when I called a toll-free number.). So, that's always an alternative when someone knows they'll rack up a lot of time (assuming MJ counts these calls against the limit).
Also, neoplasm said she used 4 hours per day (7200 minutes per month) for the first couple months. Then 2 hours per day (3600 minutes per month). [2]
Wow, I just decided to give that 214-884-5124 phone call another try before I removed it from my RingBranch list...and to my surprise someone answered the phone!
I was told that I was terminated for excessive use. The CSR said I can still receive incoming calls for free, but to make outgoing calls I would have to purchase International Prepaid minutes, which would be billed at $0.01/min for calls within the US.
Q: I only use my MJ ~2hrs/day, but had one weekend of high usage - is there any way you can re-enable my normal service?
A: Unfortunately, no.
Q: I have several other friends who use MJ and want to make sure this doesn't happen to them - what are the usage limits?
A: Unfortunately, I don't have that information.
Q: Is there anywhere I can find that information? The web site doesn't explain what 'excessive usage' means.
A: Unfortunately, no.
So, at $0.01/min I think it's probably better just to buy a new MJ for $40.00. That'd be equivalent to buying 4000 minutes, which at 2hrs/day (120mins/day) I would use up in just over a month. So, if I stay under the excessive usage limits (whatever those may be
) for more than a month, I'm better off having bought the new MJ.
Anyways, at least they answered the freaking phone.
Ga-day mate,
No - one MJ per machine. Even the ones that walk on water have not figured out how to make two run on one machine - but a cheap thin client is almost as good, still less power than tow regular computers.
I can probably live with a Cap if I knew what the hell it was. The way they are doing it now is like Russian Roulette.
Maybe what is saving me is maybe by having 4 Jacks, office, home and travel use that my heavy usage is being spread out over 4 Jacks which is keeping me under the ban limit. Still it's troubling that there appear to be some unstated usage limit.
But 86ing someone and then not even telling them, allowing them to think something is just wrong with their MJ device is about as unprofessional as it comes.
I was going to question where you saw "UNLIMITED." But, I went to YouTube to look at one of their infomercials.ret27m wrote:Hmm I bought my MJ because of UNLIMITED use,
At 35 seconds it says "Call everyone. Talk as long as you want. For just $19.95 a year."
However, MJ's "out" is that their ToS says they reserve the right to change their terms at any time, without notice.
The ToS also says they can terminate service for excessive usage. But, I don't know if that wording is new. It appears the ToS was changed recently. 3-4 months ago it contained something about using the uninstaller to terminate the agreement at any time. Now it doesn't say that. Also, it contains some wording about other products/services for an additional fee. I don't remember seeing that before.
jaqie, I've noticed a few of your posts - I think you are going to be a valuable resource for our group. (just did some more research and see you are a very "old-timer". Glad you are staying in touch.)
Would you like it better if HolmanGT said "No. One MJ per 'virtual' machine"?
Since few of us run virtual machines, I think his comment is completely true... as far as it goes.
I think that MagicJack has a looming problem with the Federal Trade Commission. Their TV commercials still say "talk as long as you like," "keep your phone number for a lifetime," "never a long distance bill," etc. When they cut people off without warning, and force people to either find a replacement service OR buy another MagicJack (and get a different phone number), and then offer "some" people an overage charge plan, they are making false advertising claims for which the FTC can shut them down, or compel them to change that advertising, or perhaps compel them to change their ToS.
Besides putting the people who bought the 5-plan extended plan on really thin ice, the problem says that any small business trying to rely on MJ is really foolish.
None of this tells us what we can count on. It begins to look as though competitors like JoiPhone.com might be a LOT more useful.
Ah no you haven't - a virtual machine is not the same machine that why it is called a virtual machine. And an HP thin client doesn't lend itself to that sort of work load. Unless you want to turn your Thin Client into a toaster.jaqie wrote:Uh...yes we have.HolmanGT wrote:No - one MJ per machine. Even the ones that walk on water have not figured out how to make two run on one machine
VMware + multi adapters. I had it running a year plus ago.
And you are saying that you have Vertual Machines running on a Thin Client, if you do you are truly the Guru. Besides a VM is not the same machine it is another machine albeit Virtual.
The person asked if you he could run a second MJ on his thin client, his existing machine and the answer is still a resounding NO.
And we wont even good to the extent of mentioning if you have several (lets say business phone running in several vertial environments you are going to need a fairly powerful server to do this and alas the age old problem of putting all you eggs in one basket. The one multi VM server goes done so does every phone it is running. Thends to make a single phone on a single thin client look much more appealing. I think that is what the industry referes to a a "Blade System" (IBM anyway) in which it is a lot of individual hardware items where if any one piece goes down the majority of your system is still up.
PS - Please share with us what kind of machine you have multiple MJ units on running in a virtual environment - my bet is it is not a thin client.
I ain't gonna do your homework for you, do your own. check the forum history.
OK maybe I will a little. Feh.
FYI windows 2000 can be thinned down to run on 32MB ram. I had MJ running on a stripped down win2k vm running in the freeware vmware player using 64MB ram on a P3-500 laptop with 256MB which has less oomph then some thin clients these days. It was quite snappy, along with another MJ running in the host OS which was a non stipped down XP on that same laptop. And this was, as I said well over a year ago. I dont feel like digging it up to show someone I don't know from adam. Im saying its possible, and ive done it. I betcha AlaninKY remembers my post on the original MJ forums about it too, to be honest.
Most thin clients ive seen lately use either the via C7 or the intel atom chip, which is more powerful then the p3 500 is, as well as using 256MB or more of RAM. Check out the via pico ITX mobo recently? That can take 1GB of ram, and IMO makes a great thin client mobo.
So, again, Yes, I have. Im taking off now, have fun arguing with the wall, I dont feel like tutoring someone who is combative, argumentative, and ignorant of what can be done with thin clients and VMs for free. If you want to pay me, that's a different story.
Yes, I remember!!
Running a mj on a vm and one on the physical machine is the same as running 2 mj's on the physical machine. I'm sorry but this is very picky and selective. The VM is running on the physical machines hardware and IN it's operating environment... You can pick that apart all you want. Fact of the matter is.. that IS 2 MJ's running on the same PHYSICAL machine. If the physical machines operating environment goes down or has damaged files important to stability and operation.. that VM will also fail. How anyone can argue that is not 2 MJ's running on the same machine is beyond me.
I realize Magicjack has the TOS agreement. So this means that their commercial contradicts what's in the TOS, right? Is that legal? I personally haven't had any problems at all regarding this issue but it does make one wonder how they can advertise unlimited when they clearly do have a limit? Yes they are protected by the TOS, but not by the false advertising.
The commercial I saw said "call your friends, talk as long as you want, for $19.99 a month." A lawyer would say MJ didn't say how often you can talk as long as you want. Just like a lawyer would say an "all you can eat" buffet didn't say where you had to eat the food (but won't let you take a car load to-go).mark40511 wrote:I realize Magicjack has the TOS agreement. Advertising is about helping people hear what they want to hear. MJ is good at it.
Another question from curiousity, how many international minutes do you have to purchase? I use magic jack is a home phone and I would really hate to lose my number. I'm more dependent on my cell phone, but it's nice to have magic jack there.daveleone wrote:It is permanent. (Until you buy a new MagicJack, or pay for "International Minutes")ret27m wrote:I wonder, when they shut you down for over use, when do they re-activate your ability to make calls? Just Curious
I read (maybe in this thread?) that they're charging excessive users .01 per minute. If you fall into that category, then you'd be using over 2000 minutes per month. So, you'd probably buy a month or two ($20 to $40).grape8pe wrote:how many international minutes do you have to purchase? I use magic jack is a home phone and I would really hate to lose my number. As someone else pointed out, if you're using MJ that much, you'd be better off buying 2-3 extra units and spread your usage over them. (Radio Shack is rumored to be selling MJ for $29.99 Nov. 28th only.).
Johnny,
We have offered refunds to anybody with excessive usage.Excessive usage constitutes people who make such excessive expensive phone calls that they would make me have to raise the rates for everybody else.
I will put something out in the Knowledge base so people understand.this was fractions of 1% of people who who offered refunds and we kept on there incoming calls too.
