New Owner, very impressed !!!

I am a previous Vonage user. I can give you some real-world benefits and problems with Vonage compared to Magic Jack.

Vonage: They supply the router with phone jack. They cost $30.13 every month including tax. They have unlimited long distance, free voice mail, free caller ID, E911, you get a phone number, you get three-way conference calling, and you get call forwarding. Vonage worked pretty well accept sometimes their router caused conflicts with my computer cable modem and caused system instability. This would require a re-boot at the very least and resetting the cable modem and router in other more serious crashes.

Magic Jack: They do not give you a router  Luckily, you don't need one. Everything runs from a very handy USB Jumpdrive/adapter that even comes with a handy 6 inch extension. :)
You get everything that I was getting with Vonage.
I paid $46.90 shipping included this month..... I will have to pay another $19.95 in a just 12 months to buy another 1 year license for the Magic Jack.... :? My cost for the first year will be a whopping $3.91 / month. Next year they expect me to pay a huge price tag of over $ 1.66 / month !!!!!

I thought this was supposed to be a good deal !!!

I plugged in the Magic Jack and filled in the registration screen and signed up for my phone number in my area code and then guess what happened.... the damned thing just up and worked !!!!

I was listening to a dial tone in under 1 minute. I placed a few calls and to my utter dis-belief, they went right through. So at this point I am thinking this is way to good to be true. I called my wife from my cell phone yesterday and she informed me that the call is even clearer that with Vonage. No static in the background and the call quality is much clearer and crisper with no hint of "digitized" echo. Now I have no other choice but to keep it and love it... :D

I am sorry for the sarcastic humor but I had mostly good experiences with VoIP using Vonage but I also had some problems and call quality issues that they were never able to solve. With MJ, I just plugged the freaking thing in and it...... worked as advertised

I guess I am a bit stunned but if it continues to work this well, I may check into becoming a re-seller. Finally a way to get free long distance and a home-based phone for under $2 / month with all the amenities and have it actually work very well!!! :D Unreal.

I think that Dan has a great product backed by an even greater idea. My hat is off to you sir, I am very impressed.

just got mine

I just bought mine online today and hope that it's everything you guys are making it out to be...from what i've read, most people seem to like it but also looks like the customer service/support is lacking. Thanks for your 2 cents on your MJ experience!

The three week update

Post by Magic Jacked-Up »

OK, it has been 3 weeks since I got my MJ and here is the update. I went to make a call last Monday night and I was not at all happy to hear NO DIAL TONE!!!!

Then I realized that my wife had turned off the computer.... :?

OK, I guess we can chalk that one up to USER error. My bad

I have nothing but praise for this little beauty so far. The calls are very clear and have no background static like the Vonage had. I use a 3.8 GHz. cordless phone with MJ and even upstairs on the other end of the house the calls are crystal clear with no digitized voices or echos. I am very happy and I think I can work $20 / year into my budget much easier than $30 / month !!!

The little bugger works great... as long as you turn the computer on :D

I really like the Voicemail and it is very convenient being able to just hit the VM button on the soft-phone and listen to the VM's on the computer speakers and delete or save them using the keyboard number pad. Very Cool !!!

I still think you have a great thing going here Dan.

MJ isn't up to replacing a landline unless you're prepared to work at it. For example, have a cell phone as a backup, and/or use other pay-as-you-go VOIP services (vbuzzer.com, skype.com, voipvoip.com) as backups.

MJ isn't too reliable (which is ok for a $1.70 a month service). But, there can be self-inflicted problems like the "30-minute experiment" over the past few days (cutting off calls at 30-minutes). If you don't talk longer than 30 minutes, it wouldn't affect you. But, you have to wonder what other "experiment" the company's owner may try in the future.

And, VOIP businesses have a history of failing. Apparently it's a tough enough business even without the kind of practices MJ engages in. So, that's something else to consider. I.e., when you make the calculation whether to cutoff your landline, factor in how much other services cost because you might have to switch to them. I wouldn't count on $1.70 a month being around a long time (all things considered).

I too have had a great experiance with MJ and fired my phone company too, I 've saved BIG $$$. Altho others have stated that they have had some problems, it my be a good idea to keep a close watch on yours and put it thru the mill. To date I have not had even a slight hic-up, I hope you have the same. Good computer maintenance always helps.
I feel that this service has a great future.
