Hosts file edit broken bad server

Hi all just got my magic jack yesterday.

The setup was simple I used a fresh PC with winxp sp3.
10meg/1meg charter
DEDICATED MJ PC
Dell PIII 733mhz 512ram 10gb hd
set processor to background processes, disabled firewall
tweaked rwin, set full DMZ to this pc, added realvnc for headless operation,

1st problem was the local number is an hour away.

2nd CALL QUALITY (!PURE CRAP!)mainly on inbound; heavy jitter, with pops, clicks, and skips.

nothing else is being used on the net or even plugged in

i do have several boxes but i don't want MJ software on em
its charter and MJ routing into atlanta that sucks right now and i'm trying the hosts file to see if i can get memphis.
Buts it keeps using atlanta:

216.234.78.8 proxy1.atlanta.talk4free.com
216.234.78.12 vms1.atlanta.talk4free.com

tonight, it's not issuing that DNS call. It's just using the IP address. I've tried rebooting, ipconfig /flushdns, etc. No difference

I don't understand how you know your experience is due to the Atlanta server. You're using a P3 and refuse to try a modern computer (which you say you have available to you).

As far as I can tell, you haven't eliminated your hardware (such as USB deficiencies).
