Could This Be A Problem
First I want so say this is a great forum for magic jack.
Now for the question. I have not yet gave up on my phone service because magic jack is not stable enough for me to make it a phone service in my home, but I was just wondering if maybe the broadband phone service could have something to do with magic jack messing up with broken voices or bad audio or things like that. My phone service is through the modem with Atlantic Broad Band and my computers run through the router I have magic jack running on a thin client hp5720 and have done everything to the client to make it run magic jack but still get the broken voice when calling out or when someone calls me. So bad that I have to hang up. Anyway was just wondering if maybe broadband phone service could have anything to do with it. Any thoughts on this? Thanks

Try testing your voip service using one of the test sites such as http://testyourvoip.com/. Use the Boston test site and let us know what your score was there. This tests your basic connection capabilities without MJ being a factor at all.t4feb wrote:First I want so say this is a great forum for magic jack.

Not sure what all you have done to the 5720 to make it run better can you post a list of the things you've done to it?
What router do you use and how is QoS setup on the router?

Well the results for Boston was outgoing 3.9 incoming 4.08 and as far as what I did to the 5720 was just take all the crap off of it that come with it and load magic jack. as far as the router goes its a linksys WRT54GS with speed boost. I have not set anything in the QoS because I'm really not sure how to set it up to point to magic jack and I sure don't want to mess things up not knowing what to do as far as that goes. I have tried new phones and every trick I can think of from reading the forum here and nothing seems to work for the broken voice on the other end of the phone when making calls. Thanks

"Many of today's commercial routers implement SIP ALG (Application-level gateway), coming with this feature enabled by default. While ALG could help in solving NAT related problems, the fact is that many routers' ALG implementation is wrong and breaks SIP."t4feb wrote:Well the results for Boston was outgoing 3.9 incoming 4.08 and as far as what I did to the 5720 was just take all the crap off of it that come with it and load magic jack. as far as the router goes its a linksys WRT54GS with speed boost. If you have a SIP ALG function in your router you might try your system with it on or off (the opposite of whichever way it is now).
Secondly MagicJack (newer software updates) will run without DirectX but they will not run as well as they will if you install DirectX.
It only takes a few minutes to install DirectX and I am very confident it will at least minimize some of your problems.
These are the only two things I can think of at the moment they may give you a leg up on the trashy connection quality.
As fare as your your ISP's VOIP if they configured the router you can almost bet which VOIP channel it is going to favor, hint, it won't be MagicJack.

Thanks for the feed back. As far as the SIP ALG goes I went into the router and can not find any SIP ALG setting in it. I have tried to install dirx on the 5720 and it does not have enough room to install and trust me I have taken everything out of it. I was also thinking maybe there is to much noise around the magic jack and what I mean is I have a lot of components and its in the same room. Just a thought.. It seems if I make a call in the mornings it seems to be fine at times but in the afternoon is when all the trash on the voice thing happens, maybe there servers get over loaded at times, not really sure. Anyway thanks for the help and if I figure all this magic out I will post back the results. I'm sure one of the gurus out there will come up with the one shot fix. (Wishful Thinking) Thanks Again

I agree with d50man but if you want to put DirectX on anyway (it is a good thing to do) it will take five minutes and room is not a problem if you do it my way unpacking the install and using a thumb drive.t4feb wrote:Thanks for the feed back. I can't trace route to my vms1 and prox1 servers. It stalls (indefinitely) on the 9th hop.d50man wrote:Its not your setup its magicjacks voice servers and routing
capture some packets and tracert to your talkforfree server
bet it looks aweful
best of luck.
But, I can start MJ (which connects to the proxy1 server without any delay). And, I can make a call (which connects to the vms1 server without any delay).
What do you think that means?

I think the servers only respond to specific portsaz2008 wrote:I can't trace route to my vms1 and prox1 servers. It stalls (indefinitely) on the 9th hop.d50man wrote:Its not your setup its magicjacks voice servers and routing

Holman I installed direct X and all went well. I do believe the 5720 is setup the way it needs to be now and the sound is allot better now but as we discussed I also believe there is problems calling some cell phones and until the magic people start shaking hands with the cell phone company's out there we will have to live with this problem. Anyway the bottom line is thank you for your help on this matter and maybe you should think about programing for magic jack just a thought
. Maybe you could program that magic fix. Have a great day and thanks again

All numbers.. When ever I do get the fast busy or dead air after dialing, cells or landlines, I redial this way and 9.9 times out of 10 the call completes. The only time Ive ever had a problem that couldn't be cured this way was when the MJ servers were having problems and no one could make calls.. Hope that helps. Also "#" at the end

I just realized I was confusing .com and .net addresses. I just deleted my post.crackerjack wrote:Sounds like DNS problem. Try using opendns
