Greetings!
I tried sending a fax with magic jack earlier today and it didn't work. The line monitor (dial tone, dialing, and connection sound noise similar to the dial up modem) sounded normal just like it did with a regular phone line, however the fax did not go through. I tried it about five times - same result for every try. Live online chat with magic jack support said it works for some and doesn't for others. This didn't help me much or provide any helpful info. The ports are open 5060 to 5070 UDP, TCP 80 and 443. Does anyone else have the same problem? Any tips?
P.S. I know for sure it's not my fax machine because it used to work fine until i switched to magic jack.

Others have posted about their experience faxing with MJ. Do a search for "fax" and "faxing" and try the suggestions offered there.
As for port forwarding I don't believe you need to do any of that with MJ. I use MJ on all sorts of wired and Wifi connections while traveling without setting up any port forwarding (I wouldn't have access to the hotel's router to do so anyways). And I recently replaced my router at home and I don't have any port forwarding setup on MJ's behalf.
I have a Canon all-in-one fax/printer and it faxes out fine. There are lots of variables that will affect both your call quality and ability to fax. Spend some time reading the various posts, there's tons of helpful info here. From the postings, faxing works well for some people and not at all for others.
Try eliminating variables. Take your MJ to a friend's or to work, where there is both a computer and a fax machine, and try faxing from there.

Make sure that you have it set up correctly....
I use a fax program for mine, and I have to plug a telephone cord from my mj to the fax/data telephone cord port on the back of my computer. For a machine, I'm not sure whether you'd have to plug it directly into the mj or into the data port on your pc-I'd try both.
Also, whether you are using a machine or a program, you have to disable error checking and possibly lower the transmission speed. I have mine set at 7200, which seems to be optimal for my setup.
I also temporarily unplug my cordless and switch my mj to headset use. It faxs more reliably, plus I can actually watch and listen once the fax starts dialing out and make sure that I'm not just getting a busy signal, having a person pick up the line, call getting dropped, etc. Once I hear the fax noise, it takes about 5 more seconds before my program starts transmission.
Once I started tweaking my settings, I also set up a K7 account so that I could test faxes with immediate results. I could see the faxes for myself as soon as I sent them and test with the same control-only I was at both ends of the data and could make changes pretty quickly. It's truly a matter of figuring out what works best for your machine and your internet speed-took me about an hour of trials and scratching my head to get it to work right with several different types of fax errors. But it was worth it, I have yet to have a problem sending or receiving once I got it right.
Port forwarding wouldn't have anything to do with it-I know that rarely some people seem to have problems with that, but this would not be one of those cases. The ports remain the same whether you are transmitting voice or data....so if you can use it to talk on your phone, under the same premise the data would not be blocked either.

----- I see that everyone has been having problems with getting the fax to work. Well I think I have figured it out, at least for my machine. I have my phone line from the MagicJack running straight into my AIO the from there (ext 2) running to my phone. On the MagicJack, the voicemail picks up on 4 rings. So what you need to do with your AIO Fax is the following:1. Turn off error correction
2. Turn your spped to the slowest speed
3. Make sure that your AIO is set to 4 rings as well (Your fax modem will / should listen to the conversation for the TCPIP Handshake, and then still send the fax through)
4. Once you have these settings, use the HP TEST FAX number. You can do this as many times as needed to make sure that you have made the correct settings. (1-888-473-2963)
I have found out that if my speed is set over 9600, the fax machine will overide the voicemail and be trying to communicate with the ghost fax on the other end. So make sure that you keep speed at 9600, that way, if there isnt a fax on the sending end trying to communicate with your fax and the voicemail will pick up. I have tried at least 20 test each, both the fax and the voice mail. If you have any questions you may post them or you can private message me. I hope that I can help you out on this issue. In the past I had used a non-Microsoft fax application with an old Win98 box that worked fine with MJ. That is, I plugged the modem cable from the Win98 box into the MJ RJ-11 running on the WinXP box and it sent faxes.
Now, I just installed the fax service on my WinXP box. Like before, I connected a cable from the modem on the WinXP box to the MJ, also on the WinXP box. I was able to send faxes, but the dialer was over-running the MJ. So if I tried to send a fax to 444-555-1212, the MJ softphone would show me that it was dialing to 444-555-12 or 444-555-121. It would lose a digit here or there on every attempt. But the Windows fax app would hang around long enough for me to manually redial the MJ and the fax would go off on its merry way. I tried using commas in the dial string (e.g., 444,555,1212 but apparently MJ feels that when there is a pause its not going to wait but instead tries to complete the call with less than 10 digits.
Has anyone else experienced this and more importantly, figured out a fix?
