What exactly do you mean by a fix?

Well since no one's replied in like 28 days I'll just add something else...

When I plug the MJ into my laptop, ubuntu 8.04 picks it up right away. I don't need to do anything...

Newbie Here -- Ubuntu & Magicjack

Post by cooper »

Hey!

I'll try to make this quick. I have an exclusive Ubuntu 8.04 laptop, and since installing it, it has some issues with USB devices. Under windows I see 2 USB drives when I plug in the Magic Jack. When I plug it into this Linux machine, nothing happens at all. The little blue light comes on but nothing appears in the File Browser.

I then downloaded the "upgrade.exe" and ran it using Wine but it got to a point and then said I need to plug in the magicjack. I then tried to do the same thing using Crossover and got the same error message. I can pick up the attached phone and I even hear a dial tone but can't dial out. On Windows this happens if you plug in the magicjack before the program launches.

I assume due to the dial tone I'm connecting to something, but . . .

Any advice appreciated!

I used 8.04 as well. So when I plug in my magicjack, it actually does detect the 2 drives on the device. The little blue light comes on, but you can't just pick up the phone and dial. This is because the magicjack is basically being detected as just another soundcard by ubuntu. For example, you could open up skype and tell it to use the MJ as your sound device and then use a phone to talk on skype. You'll need a softphone in linux, and then you'll have to enter your SIP information, in order to use the MJ.

Try to see if you can get any sound out of the device using skype first, as that is easier because it doesn't require you to get any SIP information. If your problem isn't solved after that I can give you instructions to install the linux drivers for the magicjack.
