I need THIN CLIENT info. What should I look for?
O.K... This board has been GREAT for me, so I'm presenting my next issue:
My husband is loving the MJ, but he's not all that crazy about the computer needing to be on 24/7, so I understand that something called a "Thin Client" could help me on this issue. I went to ebay and saw a lot of them listed. Can someone give me the info I need regarding buying a thin client? Is there a brand I need to stay away from??? is there a certain model I need to get? etc...
thanks for all your help.

There is another forum on this site called magicjack tips, tricks, hacks (or some such) which contains several threads that explore thin client use.
Basically the thin client has to be able to run XP, along with some memory requirements which are explained in those threads. Most info exists on the HP T5700 series (T5700, T5710, T5720 etc.). Other brands may work but there is more info pertaining to these.
Take a peek at these threads and if anymore specific questions arise, someone will be glad to lend some knowledge.

The HP thin clients are an excellent way to go and as Lymon said there is a heck of a lot of really great info on what you need to do to upgrade the h/w, re-flashing the OS etc. Trust me, the folks who have put the information together have made it so easy to follow. I believe someone (HolmanGT ???) was selling thin clients that are already prepared for MJ, perhaps you could Private Message him to see if there are any still available. An alternate way to go is buy (or find) a cheap used PC or laptop thats running XP SP2 and use that solely for your MJ...
Accede to my demands or the penguin gets it...

I recommend contacting George Holman [email protected] I purchased one from him and it truly was and is plug and play. A very big plus is that he will give you support if you have questions. If I had it to do all over I would "Let George Do It" and save all the hassle and uncertainty of trying to do something you know little or nothing about to try to save a few bucks.
5700 memory?
Is the memory upgradeable in ALL the T57XX (T5700 to be exact). If it comes with 192/256 - this can be upgraded, its not soldered in?
Re: 5700 memory?
Not sure about the t5700, but definitely upgradeable in the t5710 and t5720. Go over to hp.com and type t5700 in the search box. It will take you to the section on this machine and you can see what upgrades and expansions are available.the_Tango wrote:Is the memory upgradeable in ALL the T57XX (T5700 to be exact). Re: 5700 memory?
Yes the t5700 memory is upgradeable. In fact it has been suggested that 512 flash ram and 512 DDR is best for the t5700. My t5720 has 1gb for both but at this time it is just for show or "expansion" as I prefer to call it.the_Tango wrote:Is the memory upgradeable in ALL the T57XX (T5700 to be exact). Re: Decent price??
You can get them cheaper, but it just depends on how patient you are. For example, I just got a t5720 (512/512) for about $90 shipped. I got my t5700 and t5710 for about $35 each a while back.shortz wrote:Looking at a T5710 XPe T5710XPe, 1.2Ghz Processor 512MB ATA Flash, 256 memory... $129. shipped...

This definitely isn't the best price around, but here's one for about $110 shipped with identical specs to what you posted except it has 512mb ram

Here's one w/identical specs to yours for $96 shipped

I would choose the 1st of the 2 I listed if you don't want to wait. It has the ram already upgraded to 512mb. If you can wait, try bidding on some and see what you can get.
Thanks for the rapid response! The more I read about all this, the less I feel that I know... fairly computer savvy (built all my own till I switched to laptop only) but never delt with this form factor..
I'm scratching my head wondering if this would be a good use for an unused 20 gb laptop harddrive that I have lying around... Maybe bide my time and save a dime???
REALLY glad I found this forum! Just made the jump from Vonage to MJ, liking the service but not liking having it eating resources on my laptop, and... if I do much with programs on the laptop, then try to use the phone, I have to restart MJ or the call is very very broken...
Oddly, on an unused laptop that my fiance has, I was able to run MJ on 192 mb of ram on a PIII 450ghz VERY slow laptop WHILE streaming Pandora in the background.. call quality was not noticably "off"....
Pretty cool deal this MJ stuff! WAY cheaper than Vonage or any other alternative.. realistic alternative that is...
I did read, somewhere, that MJ was coming out with a "wireless" device, which simply plugs into a wall socket.. no computer needed....
Thanks for the advice, I think I'll wing it for a while with what I've got, run my old laptop in the interum... (Dell PIV 2.8ghz)

Which Number??
Of these two numbers, (192MB/256MB) which is most important? Assuming 192 replicates the system disk with OS and such, the 256 would be RAM?zmaddmattz wrote:I paid $80 shipped T5700 Thin Client 1GHZ/192MB/256MB. have yet to see what it can do.
This is a fun topic! Great phone.... just need to get it completely dialed and off the frontal lobe......

Re: Which Number??
You are correct and while its possible to get one working on 192mb, its not really worth the hassle. You can buy a 1gb flash module for about $25 (linked in my signature). 256mb is sufficient, but 512mb will give you a better experience.shortz wrote:Of these two numbers, (192MB/256MB) which is most important?
