I haven't found a way, but what I do in Windows XP setting, I set the monitor and hard drive to turn off in 10 minutes since I'm using a notebook computer.

Yeah, that's not going to work for me.

If you take a look at the following link to all the stuff Microsoft fixed in Service Pack 2 on WinXP, and search for the term "USB" you'll realize you need to install it.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811113

Your magicJack might look like one USB device, but it's actually a number of USB devices rolled into one. Basically it is really a USB hub with a bunch of other USB devices attached to it.
  • A SCSI Bus (where you can attach disks)
  • A Removal Flash Disk
  • A fake CD-ROM drive
  • A Human Interface Device (HID)
Don't let the fancy term "Human Interface Device" (HID) through you for a loop. If you're using a keyboard or a mouse, then you've already got HID's on your system. The HID for magic jack is basically to get the "Human" input from your phone, like taking the receiver off the hook, or dialing a number with the keypad.

With all that going on in you magicjack USB device, and all the problems (failings) with USB microsoft has fixed in SP2, it's probably wise to make sure you've got SP2 installed on your XP system.

In my personal notes for solving USB issues with magicJack are the following entries:

I was also having this problem. I weighed the options of a buying a powered USB hub, or updating my Vista machine according to the following Microsoft article:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928631/en-us

I chose to try the powered USB hub. I picked one up at Mal-Wart 1 week ago for $19.00, and I have not had a problem since.

No more problems with sleep, and no more of the really strange, intermittent problems I was seeing: calls going on hold for no reason, inability to dial out, inability to hear the other caller, etc.

The powered USB seems to have fixed all my issues. Well worth my $19.00

I stumbled across a little tweak that seemed to clean up the crackle in the signal.I was recently researching "usb polling" and noticed that windows is set by default to 125mhz polling frequency which usually results in a 8ms latency. by adjusting the polling frequency to 500mhz it cuts the avg latency down to 1-2ms. I did this to have better mouse response(which isn't really noticeable) but I did noticed a clearer signal from my Magicjack as a result.
I looked in the Microsoft "knowledge base" for an XP fix similar to the Vista fix show in the first part, bud didn't find one. I'd guess such similar fixes have been rolled into SP2 or later XP updates. Though the polling frequency may not be of much help, one or more of the above might help with your "sleep deprivation" issues.

Could you tell me what type of hardware your running?

One of the major problems with USB is not all USB chipsets, or even ports for that matter, are created equal. A lot of system vendors cut corners and use dodgy parts, which results in inadequate power to the USB ports, or worse, erratic operation. As noted above, some people have had success using an external powered USB hub to get around the sleep/hibernate issues.

There is (yet) another possible cause of this behavior, but this one is fairly simple to fix.

WinXP by default turns off USB Root Hubs to conserve power causing some devices not to resume correctly after Windows resumes from sleep, hibernation or computer inactivity. You can change this default behavior.

In the Device Manager -> Universal Serial Bus Controllers -> USB Root Hub -> Power Management, Uncheck: "Allow the computer to turn off this device to conserve power."

This should be done for all "root hubs" on your system.

You might want to note the similarity between the use of the above settings change, and the previously mentioned use of an external powered USB hub. --In both cases power to the USB devices on the hub will remain even during sleep/hibernate.

Please let us know if the settings change works for you.
