Can't Register..

Hi. Just got a Magic Jack today. It installed fine, but when the registration window pops up it ends up telling me that it can't connect to the site and to try again later. Sometimes the registration form pops up but then switches to the can't connect message a second later. The ad in the main window sometimes flashes on and then off too. I've tried messing with IE settings, safe sites, popup blockers...followed alot of forum posts on here about issues like this but didnt fine any fixes, short of reformatting. I've tried this thing on three different computers with the same results. My connect is Alltel evdo. I ping around 150-200 and that voip test site says i'm fine. Any help to be had for this problem? Or did I just waste 39.99. Thanks for reading.

There is a 30-day free trial. But, it begins at the time of order (not when you receive it). Be careful to request an return authorization from the support group before 30 days has elapsed.

I wouldn't expect great results from wireless.

Just watch your return date as "Mark" advised.

Don't be to quick to give up I don't at the moment have any links for you but I know I have read several post where people have gotten it to work.

But - there does seem to be the 30% that that never quite get enough quality out of wireless but that involves a lot of factors not peculiar to MJ but your sig quality and speed.

I would also look over on the Magicjack DSLreports forum there seems to be a high percentage of Cell-wireless users over their (rich kids). work both sites to your advantage here and DSLreports. I am sure you can discover the glitch.

I am like "Mark" my knee jerk reaction is "EVDO, not a good way to go" but at the risk of repeating myself - I have heard of it being done. you may just have some quirky little setting out of wack.

In parting If what you have experienced was over a short period of time 24 hour or so it may be a problem on the MJ side of the fence. They never as far as I know announce when they are working on a particular server. So what doesn't work one day may work great one or two days later. I know it is bizarre and frustrating but it is part of the MJ test to see if you are worthy by testing your persistence.

Well, i'm still having the same problem today. I ordered the unit off ebay, so I doubt I have any chance at returning for a refund. Gives me a bit more incentive to figure this out. I find it weird that I can see the registration form for a split second sometimes, or the ad in the main window for a second, and then it goes blank. I hear a click between when it loads the form and then when the message about not being able to reach the server pops up. Anyway, thanks for the replies so far.

Did you try a different PC? Are you running XP or Vista? Finally, what kind of computer and what kind of internet are you trying it on....

Three different computers, two desktops and a laptop. XP with SP2 on all three. Internet is through Alltel EVDO, wireless card. No router. Tried disabling any firewalls, antivirus, popup blockers, etc and get same results.

It sounds like you're reasonably proficient. I would use "fiddler" (google for it) to trace the http traffic to see what's happening.

I'd try different browsers.

There's another guy on here who was having a lot of trouble, and he used alltel EVDO. He wasn't able to connect to MJ. His experience matched someone else (unrelated to alltel as far as I know) who traced what was happening using Wireshark (google for it). They found that no activity even reached the network card. They had to reinstall Windows. The alltel guy found the same thing (no activity reaching the network card). But, I don't know if (or how) he resolved it.

In your case it sounds like activity is reaching the network card because you at least see the page for a moment. So, I'd trace the HTTP traffic to see what's happening.

Can you not get a real ISP? I reccomend cable/fiber/dsl, but some people have had sucess with sprint evdo i think... Some dude on the forums who lives in a middle of nowhere and has horses.. dont feel like looking for him, but hes around... anyway the ISP SEAMS to be the problem, but can you get on a friend or work computer to test it out?

When I get the registration page to pop up for a split second, the fiddler app shows alot of activity, including downloading of magicjack.js, custom and common .css, and some images.

I don't know what more to suggest. If you don't see it redirect to a different URL (or something else to explain it going blank), it seems like a problem with your browser, or java, or something like Zone Alarm preventing the applet from running. Or, Alltel blocking something. Cookie blocking?

All I can think of is to find a computer with access through a different ISP, and try to install/register using it. Otherwise a fresh OS install on a computer using your Alltel?

Well, I was able to use the register url in IE and got the registration page to load fine. I'm not sure if I should have, but I went ahead and filled in all the steps on the 3 or 4 pages and registered. According to the page it all went fine. So now i'm 'registered', but the magicjack app still says i'm not connected. No dialtone through the phone either.

Did that yesterday. Thanks for the suggestion though.

I got the confirmation email and now I can log onto my.magicjack.com. It looks as though I can get to everything just fine with my connection and with IE, but the magic jack software itself just won't recognize this.

I found the user you were talking about - OurRCspace . It does look like he has a similar problem. Still looking over the thread and seeing if anything will help in my case.

Since I have registered, when the 'registration' window pops up now in the app, I get a screen for a split second telling me i'm registered already and to enter my email address, and then it switches to the can't find server screen again. Very weird. So it seems it finds the server, loads the screen, and then something somehow tells it it didn't find the server afterall and it load the default error message.

Now that you got registered using IE, I would suggest to you the same thing I did to him. Run Wireshark (google for it) and trace what happens when you start MJ. I believe he said he didn't get any traffic at all, like something was blocking MJ from even accessing the Internet (the way Zone Alarm does). That's similar to what someone else found, and fixed by reinstalling XP. (But, I don't think that other person was using Alltel. There may be no correlation.).

So, for you, it would be good to see if your MJ is even reaching the ethernet card. That would help identify if you're really twins.

I messed around with Wireshark yesterday. There's lots of activity. I set it to start logging right before I plug the unit into the usb slot so I captured everything it did. I have no idea what all of this means though, heh.

If you can get a trace while your system is quiet (web browser closed, no other activity), you can send the pcap file to [email protected]. I can compare it to mine and tell you how it looks different.

You should be aware that a trace could contain personally identifying information, like your WAN address, MJ ID and number, any lingering keep-alive web connections. You'd have to trust that I'd ignore that stuff.

Well, i've made some progress, I think. I hooked up magicjack to a computer that had dialup. It acted like it was trying to connect, but the same can't connect message came up, but the 911 bar at the bottom was different, with an address, and a yellow circle. It let me load the screen where it says i'm registered but to verify it with my email and password. I do this but still no connect. So I decide to put it back on my laptop with the alltel connection, and it connects, says ready to call. The 911 bar says not connected though..

, and the side ad still doesn't load. So I plug in the phone and there's no dial tone. New problem. I try calling, it works, and rings the other phone, but when the other person picked up, they can't hear me and I can't hear them. When they called the magicjack number, they could hear me, but I still couldn't hear them.

Not sure why suddenly I can connect. It seems, from reading other posts on here, that alot of problems magically appear and disappear. Now to work on the remaining problems...

I would use the softphone. And call 909-390-0003 (a special number that will echo everything back to you. This lets you test without bothering people.).

If the softphone works, I would try a different handset telephone, and/or a powered USB hub.

Mark, thank you so much. In reading your post above I FINALLY figured out why my MJ stopped registering - it was because I have VMWare installed on my XP Pro box and MJ was getting confused when it saw both the VMWAre adapter as well as my LAN adapter. Duh! I feel like such an idiot, but in the wonderful spirit of this board, I replying here and I will also start a new thread.
