MJ device will not install on my Dell Laptop

Post by gtburgin »

I have a MJ that works fine on my Desktop PC but wont install on my Dell laptop, both running XP Pro, service pack 2. Both direct attached to router (no wireless).

On the laptop, within a second or two of plugging in the MJ, the Device Manager shows a new entry under "Sound, video and game controllers". The entry is "USB Internet Phone by TigerJet" but it shows a yellow alert icon next to it which means it did not install properly. As a result, when the softphone boots it is stuck in Headset mode. I get no dialtone and no ring for inbound calls. Ive tried running the upgrade software AND the recovery tool. Nothing works. Ive been in chat for over 12 hours with at least 6 tech support folks and none of them and their scripted actions could figure this out. They've tried formatting the drive, deleting drivers, refreshing USB drivers, editing the registry entries. None of that worked. Im wondering if it is a hardware conflict of some type but with what?? I have no other USB devices attached. My laptop has built in speakers which are enabled and work. I cant imagine a conflict with built in speakers or else 90% of all laptops would not work with a MJ. My laptop also has bluetooth and typical 802 wireless support. That should not cause a conflict either.
I NEED SOME INTELLIGENT HELP!!

Down load this and follow the instruction in the text file.

This is a fix by David Mozer.

Probably not the intelligent help you need, but some miscellaneous information that suggests that it is not your machine or software.

I have a Dell 1520 and a Dell desktop both running XPSP3. I have installed MJ on both without a hitch. In fact, I have installed the no dongle version of MJ on the laptop. Works fine.

I hope you can fix the problem and report back.

I will try the download, thanks. Is it SPECIFICALLY for this problem?

When I first tried to intall the MJ on the laptop about 2 weeks ago it was wirelessly connected to the router. That install failed. Im wondering if the Registry got screwed up with that attempt and all attempts since are choking on the registry issue. The other possibility is a missing Windows Service that should be running but is not. That should be easy to check against my Desktop. Im clueless about how to find/fix a registry problem.

Is there a free download available for something that will uncompresses that IP_Phone_Center.rar file?

Try 7-Zip (http://www.7-zip.org/).

I haven't used it on a RAR file. But, it says it unpacks them.

Or you can go to www.winzip.com and download winzip 12.0 it allows you to use it as long as you wish but there will be a nag screen asking you to buy. It will unpack/unzip ANYTHING known to man.

Or you can go to WinRAR labs and get WinRar.

Yes the download is specifically for the scenario where the drivers show the yellow question mark.

Good luck.

PS - Winrar will do any compression format their is.

Well unfortunately the fix by David Mozer did not work. The Device Manager shows an alert just as it did before under "Sound, video and game controllers" and the device did not install. The properties panel for this failing entry shows...
"The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)"

I think prior to running this the Code was either 1 or 0 (not 28).

oops, getting rid of those smily faces the last part should have been...

I tried removing the MJ software, uninstalling the failed entry under device manager, and removing the Registry entries the tech supp folks always say to remove. I then rebooted the laptop. When it comes up and sees the MJ plugged into the USB port it starts a "Found New Hardware" Wizard which says the following on the opening panel....

" Cannot Install this hardware
There was a problem installing this hardware: USB Internet Phone by TigerJet.
An error occurred during the installation of this device
The data is invalid "

If I try to update the driver and point the driver search to the mjusbsp directory containing the MJ files, it will not allow that directory to be selected. Im assuming this is because there are no .INF files under
mjusbsp.
I'm far beyond my abilities to solve this now. Maybe time to give up.

gtburgin,

You will not find the drivers in the MJ folder or on the MJ unit. I went thru the same Easter Egg hunt one time as you have just done.

I don't know but I have a suspicion they are buried in one or two of the installer executables and probably encoded.

So if you don't get them by installing the YMAX softphone I personally don't know where you can get them. When I was in the same boat as you David came to my rescue with the YMAX softphone and it saved my bacon. "gt", I am sorry but I have run out of ideas. Maybe you should PM David and see if he has something up his sleeve. His screen name is "mozerd".
