I'm sympathetic to your comment. It gets tiring to keep providing the same info again. But, it's virtually impossible to find information in a forum (not just this one).kumar wrote: emiliomcol ^^^ Same thing applies to you IMO

That's the downside of using "conversations" as FAQs. The forum needs something like a Wiki where topical information could be collected, and new information from postings could be captured and used to enhance topics. Something that allows collaborative development (not single ownership of a posting). We could just point people to the common topics, which would be kept up to date as more information becomes available.
I've got some ideas on how to improve this situation. More thoughts coming soon.

The only way to know for sure is to try it, and then start wireshark, and make MJ go through an upgrade (however that's done). Trace the IP activity and see if the upgrade occurs, and then if any of the activity referred to the IP address for upgrade.talk4free.com.jrd4849 wrote:Does anyone know if the old 'hosts' file edit still works to block upgrades? That is adding "0.0.0.0 upgrade.talk4free.com" to your 'hosts' file.
The person who reported how to block the ads (to stop the script error) said the upgrade can be blocked the same way. Both posts were this morning, in the past few hours.

I tried the downgrade method outlined in another thread combined with this file and it simply doesn't work. After adding the hosts entry, deleting the MJ folders, blocking render.talk4free.com and flushing the DNS, the downgrade installed, but would not go to ready status.. double clicking the error 3 box would open the reg screen, but it just flashed twice and remained nonfunctional. I don't know if this because something in the hardware was flashed and rendered incompatible with the old software or due to the company's forcing users to use the new version. Has anyone gotten this to work?
Ditto
Same here followed same process, Registration screen flashes then goes away. cannot downgrade
If I allow the upgrade it disables my ability to use my office Panasonic 4-line phone.
Cannot dial out, I have switched polorazation (green-Red) with no success. My home phone MJ did not get the upgrade and works perfectly with my office phone.

Well the lobotomy was painless; I just can't tell the Green pill from the Red one!
If anyone comes up with a Step by Step on how to Downgrade and Keep from upgrading this would be the reason for this Season to do so.
I have attempted all posted bits and pieces with no success.
Greatly appreciate all those who post and painfully tread through new technology.
Merry Christmas!

Does anybody have a Magic Jack that works right now?
If everybody did the upgrade, and so far is unable to downgrade again - as I am unable to - then it would seem that everyone would be affected by the inability to dial out.
Maybe it's Dan's way to reduce that inevitable Holiday bandwidth useage to zero. Limiting calls to 1/2 hour was OK, but this is a much better corporate savings plan! He will send out the fix program on the 26th.

I had reverted back to the old software, but I had the upgrade forced on me. I kept trying the old software, but the update kept forcing itself , so I had no choice. I tried a few local numbers and the ring was constant static and distorted. Any voice was garbled. I dialed the echo number, (909-390-0003) and the ring was static as was my voice.
I tried the new software on my other notebook and the call sounded okay, so I went back to the original notebook and instead of plugging the magicJack into the USB hub I just plugged it into a regular USB port and the static sounds and distortion went away and now everything works fine.
After wrestling around with this *%&%#& thing for the past day and night I was about to scrap it and not bother renewing when it expired in Feb 09, but I'll continue to use it and if things run smoothly then I'll renew in February. My success rate with magicJack is about 70% successful. A lot of redials and a few dropped calls. I only put up with it because it's inexpensive and I have my cell phone as a back up.

Downgrading to 12-21-08 FW
thanks for the info.....seems to work well....this older interface was better as well. Blocked all domain names relevant to MJ...the AD box stays blank now
Talk is cheap, because supply exceeds demand.

Hmmm... It is strange that you got it to work. I was lead to believe they had come up with a method of forcing this latest update and if you didn't accept it your phone would stop functioning.
Does going back to the older version do anything to prevent the 60 minute cap from terminating your calls?

Is the call limit still in effect? People were told it was just for the holidays. But, the way Dan plays fast and loose with terminology, I guess we should have asked *which* holidays.HolmanGT wrote:Does going back to the older version do anything to prevent the 60 minute cap from terminating your calls?

Re: Downgrading to 12-21-08 FW
Well I know for a fact it was in effect as of yesterday about mid-day when I was cut off at 01.00.01, 1 hour, 1 second. Well at least you can say that Dan's programmers are about as precise as you can get.az2008 wrote:Is the call limit still in effect? People were told it was just for the holidays. Please post HOW you got the old update to stick. This is the make or break deal for me now as I can't use my phone with the current update.dna1776 wrote:thanks for the info.....seems to work well....this older interface was better as well. Re: Downgrading to 12-21-08 FW
Correct, the December "Lucky You" update made my Panasonic phone stop working to dial out. I can still use the softphone to dial and I can receive calls on the Panasonic. I can also dial out on a cheap corded phone.mjayer wrote:Does the new version not work on your machine?isleblue65 wrote:I can't use my phone with the current update.
I tried a powered USB hub with MagicJack plugged directly into it and the Panasonic phone plugged directly into MJ, but the same problem persists.
Reverting to the pre-lucky You upgrade would solve all of my problems It worked fine before that.

Have you tried putting an entry in your host file ("dir host /s" from every drive to find it) like:isleblue65 wrote:Please post HOW you got the old update to stick. This is the make or break deal for me now as I can't use my phone with the current update.
129.1.0.0 upgrade.talk4free.com
That would prevent it from being upgraded. But, I don't know if it would prevent it from failing because it can't.

FYI, see pageman's clever solution to change proxies here: http://www.phoneservicesupport.com/post29031.html#29031az2008 wrote:It doesn't work for proxies. But, the last time I looked at a Wireshark capture, MJ used DNS resolution for upgrade, 911 and prov1.talk4free.com. And for mls.softjoys.com.
That might be a better way to block MJ's access to the upgrade server too. Get the IP address for upgrade.talk4free.com, and set a static route (or iptables rule) to block that address.

Re: Downgrading to 12-21-08 FW
No I have not tried that, but I'll mess around with it and check out Pageman's proxy modifier too. Funny that the angle you have to take to get MJ to work the way it did before they broke it is to try to block the upgrade rather than MJ releasing another upgrade that will solve the problem.az2008 wrote:Have you tried putting an entry in your host file ("dir host /s" from every drive to find it) like:isleblue65 wrote:Please post HOW you got the old update to stick.
