Fax from MJ

Can I use Magic Jack to send a fax from my computer? If so, how do I pick what "line" to use?

the line from the magicjack. I have a splitter on mine, one to the cordless and another to the fax machine.

I don' t think you can fax through your computer USING your magicjack. However, you can use a free online tool like http://faxzero.com/ to fax your stuff to any American number for free.... The only issue is.. the person getting the fax may get an ad or something. So this isn't the best thing if you are running a business or something, but is perfect for personal use...

Mine is setup just like rickiev's and have had 100% success rate with faxing out and receiving...... from day one.......

What speed is your fax machine set to use? How old is your fax machine?

I'm using a 3 in 1 printer to fax, and also WinFax 10 program, connected from my laptop modem to the magicjack and works great.

I have mine set at medium but I did have it set on high at first and had no probs but thought it might even be better to set it a tad lower ( just in case ). It's about 2 years old. HP Officejet 5610. Also, I use the onboard fax.

Thanks to all who posted answers... I have the same setup as "rickiev" but with a different Fax software -I use RKS Fax with Vista.

I used a splitter going into MJ and it worked, just as he and "HendersonMike" said.

Funny this topic should arise-I just bought a new Canon MX300 to replace my slow, limited HP and set it up the same way-splitter off the MJ, one line to the cordless and one to the AIO printer. Tested it at full 33.6k at HP's faxback service as well as faxtoy.net, it works like a charm! I'm quite happy not needing a landline to have fax capability.

When did you buy your Magicjack. Just trying to get an idea of what version of the hardware you have? What are the computer specs and operating system on which you run your magicjack? Cable or DSL? What speed?

June 9th, 2008 It's version 2, the one with the white chip visible; not sure if this is the most current version.
Pentium Dual Core (the new one) 2.2GHz, 1 GB RAM, XP Home, mostly dedicated to MJ

I got my magic jack in February and it worked with my faxes sent from my pc. I now use an ata and have no real problems sending or receiving faxes on my pc. I have heard that basic faxes go through without any problems but faxes with elaborate graphics might have problems. I do not know if this is true.

ActFax primarily consists of two components, the fax server and the fax client. The fax server is installed only on a single computer in the network and stores and administrates all data and is responsible for the transmission and receipt of fax messages. The fax client is installed on all computers in the network that should be able to create new faxes and to have access to existing faxes. One part of the fax client is the ActiveFax printer, which is used to send faxes from Windows applications. For the installation of the fax server and the fax client, the same setup program is used.

The installation of ActFax can be done on the operating systems Windows 95 / 98 / ME / NT / 2000 / XP / 2003 / Vista / 2008 (Server and Workstation edition). Even if you plan to send faxes from a UNIX or Linux system, the fax server itself always needs to be installed on a Windows based system and not under UNIX or Linux.

To start the installation of ActFax, run the setup program from the download area (file actfax_setup_en.exe). When running the installation from a CD-ROM, the setup is automatically started when you insert the CD. To install the trial version of ActFax, enter the license key 00000-00000 in the setup. The trial version has no limitations and all functions are available (a small demoversion watermark is printed at the end of each fax page in that case then).

The setup program automatically detects and configures all connected modems during the installation. The fax server is therefore available for operation right after the installation finished.

Problems here. Sending faxes seem to go through without a problem. But receiving faxes fail. I have lowered the speed to 9600 and same. This is on a fax machine not pc.

When did you purchase your magicjack? What type of computer, cpu, etc. ? Can you send at 33.6 ?

The MJ was purchased right before x-mas. The PC is a Thin Client 5710 512/512.
I just tested with Faxtoy and looks like the sent faxes are blank too.

Try k7.net for receiving faxes it is free you get a free DID and there is not limit to the faxes you can send, I have try it and it works 100% of the time, then you can send faxes using MJ a fax modem and any free fax server.
I use activefax it is excellent and free and it works great with MJ, you have to disable error control and lower speed for your fax modem. I just put my K7 number in the outgoing fax cover. this setup have work for mi 100% of the time.

I have qwest as my internet provider. I am trying to send and receive faxes via my modem and MJ.

I have windows xp sp3. The fax program I am using is called faxtool vs 5.03 it is set up as follows. USB out of computer>phoneline from MJ to line in on modem>lineout of modem to phone.

When I try to send or recieve a fax it cuts off my internet access. I know this as the light on the qwuest moden turns red.

Any suggestion on what to do to fix this. Oh yeah I have the speed for the faxtools set to the lowest it will go.

I found out what the prob was.... Even though qwest sends you all the filters to use especialy the one that they say to use from the line to the router.. well You are not suppose to use that one.. just to use the smaller ones on the other phone lines...

Removed the one filter.. works great...
