Have tried just about all the tricks and can't seem to get a consistent call quality with the MagicJack. I can usually hear my call perfectly though sometimes I will get some garbling, but on the other end they are getting static or sometimes can't hear me at all. Have also experienced outright call cutoffs after only a few minutes. Every once in a while the call quality overall is at least passable, but certainly NEVER something I would have paid for. I'm sure someone here will point to the error of my ways.
I'm running XP on a 2.93 ghz machine. I have USB 2.0 ports. Am using Cox high speed cable internet with a download speed of 15000. I ran that optimizer program today and it bumped up the speeds to 25000, but the call quality remains the same. I normally bump magicjack.exe to high priority. I did have the processor priority on backround services, but then I read somewhere not to do that. Didn't seem to help anyway. The only thing I've seen that I have not done was an external A/C powered USB port. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Help...I'm getting really annoyed!

I wouldn't try a powered USB hub unless I confirmed that using the softphone with a headset makes a difference.[email protected] wrote:The only thing I've seen that I have not done was an external A/C powered USB port. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
I'd also eliminate the router to see if that makes a difference.
I'd eliminate wireless to see if that makes a difference. Then I'd consider QoS. See http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/MagicJack/ ... 9_voice.3F

Let me see if I'm reading you correctly. First I should try a softphone with a headset and if that is ok then I may have a power issue with using a phone? I'm not using a router and I'm not on a wireless connection. Does QoS still come into play?

Thats right first try only softphone and headset to see if that works, and if you are not using a wireless connection then you dont have to use the QoS option i mean that option its only available on the router if you have one...[email protected] wrote:I wouldn't try a powered USB hub unless I confirmed that using the softphone with a headset makes a difference.

Anyone having problems should always disconnect the handset from the USB device and try using a headset. That will isolate what the problem is. If the problem goes away, you know it's something about the USB port, device or handset. If not, then it's something else (like wireless interference, a problem with the router, with MJ's network, etc.).[email protected] wrote:First I should try a softphone with a headset and if that is ok then I may have a power issue with using a phone? QoS could be an improvement for you. You'd have to follow the details in the wiki, which I sent in the first post. But, if you have one of those combination modem/router things, then you'll never be able to take advantage of QoS. You either need a router you can flash to a different firmware with QoS capabilities. Or, the ability to connect a Hawking Broadband Booster between the router and modem. (If there's only one computer connected to the combo modem/router, then I guess you could put a Hawking BB between them).
If you quote text from what you reply to, you'll want to familiarize yourself with the "quote" button. It will help people identify what's what.

What do your test results look like on a VOIP test site like http://testyourvoip.com ? Maybe you can get a hint as to the exact nature of the problem there. If you need help interpreting the "detailed result"; I am sure if you post them some will help you.[email protected] wrote:Have tried just about all the tricks and can't seem to get a consistent call quality with the MagicJack. Ok have taken some of the advice listed and still have inconsistent call quality. Have tried the softphone with a microphone and it's the same quality. Have run the VOIP test software and am getting around 4.0 pretty consistently. Have been trying it at different times of the day to see if that makes a difference. So in summary here's where I'm at.
1. Running a 3yr old E-Machine with 2 Gig Ram and 2.93Ghz processor.
2. Have Cox High Speed Cable Internet that has been tweeked with TCP optimizer to get mid 20,000 kbs download speed and around 3,500 upload speed.
3. I do not have a router and have only 1 machine going thru the Cox supplied Motorola cable modem.
4. I keep magicjack.exe on high priority.
5. Have tried all 5 USB ports to see if that was the issue.
6. I am not running any fancy software or a lot of peripheral equipment...in fact it's pretty bare bones with only a few websites open at a time with one printer attached.
My next thought would be trying to disable the power management of the USB ports.....If that makes no difference then is purchasing an externally powered USB hub worth trying or should the power management disabling essentially do the same thing? Thanks for the help.
