post holiday problems

Post by ChicagoFan »

Good day,

I just bought my MJ over the holidays (purchased Dec. 21 at Radio Shack) and installed it on Jan. 4. I've been singing its praises until yesterday, when it quit working. :(

I have a handset attached to the MJ, and when I call the MJ (from my cell phone for example), the phone rings and I can pick up the handset and connect, but cannot hear the caller.

However, when I call the MJ and I have the software answer, I can hear the caller fine through the computer speakers (I don't have a mic to test 2-way comms).

As I said, this was working fine until Sunday...unsure what happened! Any advice is appreciated...I am really hoping not to have to ditch this product. (FYI, I am running Vista, and have read about the many problems associated with the upgrade -- not sure exactly when my MJ did the upgrade -- immediately upon installation, or when).

Oh, forgot to mention, I have tested 2 additional handsets, and 2 additional RJ11 phone lines, with no luck. I also have an AC powered USB hub that "says" it supplies 500a power to each port--but I know the USB hub is at least 2-3 years old.

Thanks in advance to any help you can provide!

First thing to try is a power cycle..
This usually cures the problem you are describing.. Power down, power back up one thing at a time till they all light up completely starting with the Modem> Router (if you use one)>PC. then Plug the MJ back in and bring it back up.. That's a good start.. I have a nother step to try after that, but I think that you may not need it.. give a shot and let us know :)

ps Even if you dont have Vista, go here and do the vista upgrade after or before the power cycle...

Msiam, thank you for your help.

I shutdown my PC. I powered down my cable modem, then my router (Linksys WRT54G v8.0 / BCM5354KFBG Chipset / CPU 240Mhz ).

I then went back to my workstation (in another room running wireless g), unplugged all power from the wall, made sure my mJ was unplugged from the USB hub, went back and repowered cable modem, waited for it to come back up, repowered Linksys, waited for it to come up, and then repowered and restarted workstation. After all initial services started, plugged in mJ. Tested, still same problem. Ran the upgrade again for safety, same problem.

Please advise on what you think the next step is.

Again, appreciate the help!

Have you tried other computers?? If no. try.. if that doesn't work.. open MJ to ready to call> in "my computer" look for the two MJack icons.. one of them probably the second, when you right click will have "Format" click format.. It will be quick, when it does that.. unplug the MJ.. then count to about 15 and plug it back in.. let it load up and try it .. You will not be messing anything up.. go ahead and do that.. let us know how it goes..

BILL:

Seriously, Get a different router, or flash the WRT54G V8 to DD-WRT Micro.

Micro DD-WRT isn't an easy flash, but it can be done. You first have to do a VxWorks kill. It is easier to replace the router with a better router. The router is your problem.

My parents have a very cheap D-Link WBR-1310 and it works fine.

If you can afford it, buy a WRT54GL and reflash the firmware in it to DD-WRT mini, or std.

Mark says to use Tomato. That is fine too.

Thanks guys,

I did the drive format, unplug, replug, which still didn't work. online chat support had me try that earlier as well. No dice.

I had been considering tomato or DD-WRT (tomato looked most interesting), but before going down that road, I did a test...

I went wired direct to my cable modem to establish my internet connection (PPPoE), and then installed the mJ on my laptop's USB port...I suppose I never mentioned that I use a laptop, albeit that shouldn't matter. Still same problem. As far as trying on another computer, I do have a minitower that I can pull out of the "ranks of the unused" to try...it'll be interesting to see how that works. (it's XP).

Thanks for the continued support and suggestions.

One way audio is usually NAT related. Moving your computer to the "wild side" of the network should have cured the one way audio. You have something going on there which doesn't add up.

Is your cable modem one of those combo modem/router/wifi things? It wasn't clear from the description of what you did whether you were actually bypassing the router, or just connecting with a wire instead of wirelessly.

Go to device manager, look under "Sounds", Do you see a yellow (!), it might be the USB Audio driver for TigerJet. Thats the driver it uses for its usb sound. If its Yellow or not, uninstall it.

Once uninstalled, do a Scan for Changes, it should find the USB drivers and reinstalled them.

Hopefully that will correct the problem. Let me know how it goes...

No, my cable modem only has one ethernet port, so my router was disconnected completely.

So late, late last night, I dug out a pc that I hadn't used since Aug 2007. 2.0 GHz box, 256MB RAM, running XP. I recently bought a wireless network USB adapter, and got the box re-setup. At first for some reason, it didn't want to recognize the mJ when it was plugged in--wouldn't create drives, etc...but after a little bit of cleanup, once I got it to where it "recognized" mJ -- i.e. added drives, downloaded updates, etc. it worked fine. All calls went through. For future documentaion purposes, I'll list what I believe the problem was NOT:

mJ iself
Linksys WRT54G v8 flashed to 8.005
not necessary to add rules for any new ports
*I don't believe it's a USB power issue either, as I currently and previously had it hooked up to a USB port directly on the PC

Interestingly enough, after getitng it working last night, I did more tests by dialing 909-309-0003. I didn't realize that I should actually hear it ring! So apparently I also was unable to dial-out using the mJ. So both inbound voice to the handset and outbound dialing from the handset were not working. Outbound voice from the handset worked.

Thanks to everybody for their help, and trust me, I will continue to investigate this not working on my Vista laptop...but for now I'm going to shoot for a week of stability.

Thanks for all the input! Any additional comments/feedback welcome.

When you get a chance, try "Rickiev's" suggestion concerning devices in Device Manager. (I'd like to get more info about whether that works. If it does, I can add it to the wiki.).

Hey Mark,
Its worked for me, when I lost the dial tone, hopefully it will work with the other problems regarding incoming/outgoing sounds.

Hello:

After using MJ for one year I renewed for another on Dec 18, 2008. Previously, I had some problems with MJ but for the money it was a good second phone. However, I am having the same problem now.

1. Very clear dial tone.
2. When I call, the caller can hear me, I can't hear the caller. Verified this by calling my cell phone.

3. I am on Vista home premium and using MJ on a laptop. This is the only computer that I have ever used MJ.

4. I have gone through almost 4 hours of idiotic chat with MJ tech support and gone through all the hoops.

5. After my first tech chat last week I decided to do a search on the net and found 3 possible solutions and one of them was going through the Vista registry and deleting a few folders in USBstor. Vista did not let me delete the vid1307...... folders. I was logged in as an administrator.

6. I then followed this method and connected magic jack after unplugging it and waiting for 15 seconds or more.

1. Double Click on your Hard Drive (usually called C:\).
2. Double Click on Documents and Settings.
3. Double Click on the Folder that has the Username you use when logging into Windows.
4. Double Click on Application Data.
5. Double Click on Folder labeled “mjusbsp”.
6. Double Click on Folder labeled “in00000″.
7. Find the Setup File there and Delete.

It started working. It worked for exactly 2 days and then it started having the same problem.

I followed the above method, it did not work this time. I then followed another method going through the Device manager.. and it did not work either.

Talked to MJ again for more than hour and they finally told me that they would send me a replacement MJ. I doubt it would do me any good, but I will give it a shot.

The point is, I had no such serious problem before the renewal. Did they push a faulty upgrade during the last week of December, 2008?

You can check this link to see if any of these solutions would work for you.

I need help to solve this problem.

Thank you very much

Did you try disconnecting the handset, and making a call using the softphone and a headset?

Did you try bypassing your router, connecting directly to your modem? (Be aware that this can expose you to malware if you don't run a software firewall.).

Did you try the suggestion mentioned earlier in this thread by "Rickiev"?

Have you tried a powered USB hub?
