do i need my computer not to go to sleep
can i p;ug it into a usb hub or the cable modem directly?

You can plug it into a USB hub if it is a powered hub. Non-powered hubs do not deliver enough electricity to power the device and a telephone. You cannot plug it in directly to a cable modem.can i p;ug it into a usb hub or the cable modem directly?

You can connect the Magic Jack to an on-home phone system. Make sure it's disconnected from your telco first, or you could fry your Magic Jack. I've read that the ringer equivalence for the MJ is 1, so that means you can have only one handset on the wire without using a REN amplifier for additional handsets.

Just one nit to pick with this explanation, though. You can put several phones on the line as long as their RENs total less than 1.
