2/1/09 Not able to hear incoming calls.

Post by Mark »

This morning I was able to use my phone but now I can hear my phone ring but when I answer I cannot have a conversation because I can't hear the person on the line.

Also, I can not call out. I hear a dial tone but cannot call anyone.

Are you using a handset connected to the USB device?

If so, have you tried disconnecting the handset and making a call using the softphone with a headset? (This would tell you whether it's something isolated to your USB port, device and/or handset. Or, if it's a problem with the MJ server.).

No! I'm using an AT&T 5.8GHz wireless that has worked fine since I bought it but for some reason this afternoon I cannot hear the person calling me and I also can't make outgoing calls even though I hear a dial tone.

You should still follow the advice provided to help diagnose what the problem is, isolate causes, eliminate causes.

I disconnected the handset phone wire connection from the Magicjack device and then connected a headset into the back of my PC with the pink mic connection and green headphone connection plugged into my PC in the correct pink and green connections and I didn't even hear a dial tone. So I must have connected it improperly.

I have also used two computer with no success so it must be a server problem.

Same Thing Here

Have same issue here. Can call out, can't hear outgoing call(hear dial tone and digits dialing then nothing). But I am connecting to the person. Also on call back it is iffy if I can hear them (incomming). Usally can if not on first try but works when they call back a second time. Have unpluged handset and used softphone only still same problem(except i hear digits no dial tone no ringing no voices). This has only happened today. It started when my wife made a outgoing call she said the phone gave a few rings then went silent. Well my wife breaks everything

It's hard to know without testing it using the softphone and a headset. That kind of usage should be part of every MagicJack user's toolkit. It's essential to debugging problems.

I assume you restarted MagicJack. You could also try changing your proxy as described on the wiki FAQ. Otherwise, just wait and see if it's a server problem.

Which state are you located. So far, we have a PA and NJ problem.

Well, I'm using different H/W (ATA) and for the first time in a long time, I'm also getting some in and out bad reception on the receiving end although dialing out and talking out appears to be fine. I'm in CA using the Los Angeles proxy.

Same here.. Get a dial tone, but do not hear it ring OR hear anyone pick up. I tried a MJ to MJ call. It rang 2x then silence.. Called my land line. It rang here but not on the MJ side. The answering machine picked up but I never heard it on the MJ side NOR could I leave a message.
This happened a few weeks ago and it cleared up after a day. Sooooooo I have to assume they are having server issues OR doing some sort of update " LUCKY US" :)

Everything now works

Post by dyoung »

Everything is now working again. Must have been a problem with the server. I am in Pittsburgh and I seem to use both the Pittsburgh and Philly servers. Seems Like I hit Philly on outgoing and Pittsburgh on incomming.

Try a reboot? SOMETIMES after they do something on their end a reboot helps on our end.
Just a thought.

No audio on connected outgoing call also here in Boston. Free trial is up soon. Should I stay or should I go? Sounds like MJ might not be quite ready for prime time yet.

PS.Perfect traceroute to proxy from ATA and based on this thread I'm not alone.

MJ seems to go through phases of instability. It will be stable for 3 months, then fall apart either due to a forced "Lucky You" upgrade, or network upgrades, or overselling capacity, or (unannounced) policy changes like 30-minute call caps.

If a person's willing to put some effort into it, and use a pay-as-you-go service (like vbuzzer.com or Skype) as a backup, they can save some good money. If they believe Dan's hype (that you just plug it in and everything works like a landline) they'll be disappointed.

I think the biggest problem is that Dan hasn't learned the concept of having a development, test and production environment. To him, it's all the same. He makes changes to Production without testing things. Rolls out upgrades without testing. Upgrades production network servers on the fly.

Just communicating these things via a "system status" web page would be a huge benefit. But, he doesn't even notify his chat support staff of what's happening. They only learn after 100 people contact them with the same problem (and after telling the first 100 people "no, there's nothing happening.").

MagicJack is a great idea. It's just too bad it was Dan's idea.
