Notice from Brother re: fax and VOIP

Post by cdwaldron »

I received the following recently about using Brother machines to send fax over VOIP:

Brother International Corporation's Customer Service Division has had several inquires regarding the use of Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and problems with sending or receiving faxes are occurring. We would like to share with you a possible solution to this issue.*

Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is not a marketed feature of your Brother machine; however there is a Compatibility setting available with this machine that may assist with sending and receiving faxes when using VoIP. Adjusting this setting lowers the bps rate (modem speed) and turns Error Correction Mode (ECM) off. To adjust the Compatibility setting follow the steps listed below:

Press Menu or Menu/Set key.
Select Fax, Miscellaneous, and Compatibility.
Press the up or down arrow key to select Basic.
Note: Basic reduces the maximum modem speed to 9600 bps.

Press OK or Menu/Set or Set key.
Press the Stop/Exit key.
Note: Although VoIP is not a marketed feature of this machine, Brother will continue to monitor customer requests for possible future products.

CD,

Nice tip and work-around. We mortals salute you.

Also VOIP must be getting much bigger than I had imagined if Brothers is openly suggesting they are going to monitor the market and adjust their equipment accordingly.

I fax over VOIP and had made changes similar to those a long time ago. My fax is hooked to an Asterisks system, not MagicJack.

I also installed a DSL filter on the line backwards (line jack into fax, phone part into voip adapter). It seems to help.

Yep, same settings I'm using on my HP and it works great!! You may still have issued with these settings if your using Vista though. I never could get my Vista machine to work as the fax line.
