powered usb hub
My magic jack works great but if my computer is on for a couple of days I need to turn my computer off then back on for it to work properly again. My question is if I buy a powered usb hub can I hook it up to a timer and would that be the same the same as if I unplugged it?
Re: powered usb hub
That's an ingenious way to do it. It should work. But, it could leave your MJ device corrupted. The device contains a flash drive which the softphone opens for write every 3 seconds. You should use "safely remove."sabresfan wrote:My magic jack works great but if my computer is on for a couple of days I need to turn my computer off then back on for it to work properly again. It would be better to schedule your computer for reboot (which will shut down your device safely). I don't know how. I'm sure others know. Or, you could search the internet for that. Or, ask in an XP/Vista forum.
You could also schedule the killing and start of magicjack.exe. (Again, I don't know what scheduling tools are available. If someone else doesn't chime in, you'd have to go to an XP/Vista forum.).

Ok, here is what I did. I created a "Restart" shortcut on the desktop. Just rightclick on your desktop and click "New" then select "Shortcut" Then enter "shutdown.exe -r -t 00" in the box for "Type the location of the item" click "Next" and change the name to "restart" Now start "Task Scheduler" in the Control Panel and set up a task to run that new shortcut. You set the frequency. I reboot mine once a day, you can set it to weekly too. Hope this helps...... Seems to have solved my issues. I just reboot it when I normally sleep.
Yes, sorry about that. I posted before I fully tested it.... I did find a free program on the net that does work, and I did test. It is called Shutdown Scheduler. Since it is freeware I will post a url for it. I hope that is ok here.

This worked great. I tested it and it does work nicely. I have it set to restart the computer every night at 3:00am
Hope this helps..........

You can use task scheduler located in the control panel if you are using xp.
Create a new task and using the wizard browse to C:\Windows\system32\shutdown.exe
Click through the prompts and use a password (create one for the account if you have not yet)
On the last screen you can check a tab to show the properties.
The Run: tab should look like this "C:\Windows\system32\shutdown.exe" withouth the quotes.
Change it to look like this "C:\Windows\system32\shutdown.exe -r -t 01" without the quotes. The last part that is the 01 can be changed if you want to allow some time for stubborn programs to exit gracefully, just increase the number, mine is set to 60.
You can also create a scheduled task to shutdown magicjack just before the restart task executes. I shutdown magicjack 1 minute prior to the restart.
