Why run MagicJack as a service?

Post by CharlieRC »

I have seen several post explaining how to run MJ as a service under Windows but no real explanation as to why this method is better than the start up method in the normal install procedure. Would someone please give a simple explanation.

A service runs at a higher priority which should improve call quality or at least keep lower priority apps from lowering the quality.

A service will run even before Windows starts

A service can recover and restart if you set it to

You can hide the MJ softphone completely in service mode

And when the MagicJack is vulnerable to remote compromise, the hacker will have Local System rights and permissions. That will be handy for her.

I have never seen a CERT announcement blaming SJPhone for any vulnerability, so I am personally not concerned about that exposure.

Ah yes, Ostrich based security. Well here's one CERT announcement. There are others.

SJ Labs SJphone 1.60 was patched so this is not a current issue. But a good reminder that vulnerabilties happen and good example that users are the last, not the first, to know about vulnerabilities.

Good catch. I must have passed over it and forgotten about it because it affected Windows Mobile, which nobody in my life has.
