The ToS seems to be changing on a weekly basis. I thought about adding it to the wiki once a month (or week). The wiki's "history" feature would show what changed with each new copy.

It seems Dan is planning for additional services. A couple months ago the ToS referred to "MagicJack In" and "MagicJack Out." Like, maybe he's planing ala carte features. There's also the "femtocell" thing we keep hearing about (a cordless phone with a proprietary router adapter as a base station?).

I think it would be a good move if he allowed for softphone-only use. Let you download it and use it as soon as you purchase MJ. The USB device should be an optional add-on for those who want it.

The way it's all bundled together causes everything to live or die together (with the same hardware/software compatibility problems, etc.). I can understand how it's easier to market MJ to newbies as a simple 1-2-3 gizmo. But, that comes with the downside of being unable to run the softphoen alone when the USB drive dies. Or, to get up and running with the softphone to confirm the service works, then use the USB device.

All of this is posturing by MJ to be regarded as an information or entertainment service and not as a telephone service. Everything I have seen with regard to the MJ signup and usage experience is designed to posture MJ as an internet information and entertainment service, just like AIM or Skype, and not like a telephone service, such as Vonage.

Here is a short list of what MJ has done to reinforce this positioning.

- The principal User ID bears no relation to any telephone number.
- Users must specifically and separately choose to add the MagicJackIn and/or MagicJackOut service to their subscription.
- Users must agree to accept the "multimedia experience" that is regarded by them as a principal element of the service. That would be the parade of [advertisements and] announcements in the softphone window.
- Even though we have yet to figure out how to accomplish downloading and registering the software without having purchased a dongle, in the ToS the software is required and the dongle is an optional purchase to further enjoy the enhanced features of the service.
- The service is declared to be an internet information service and not a telephony service.

By doing this, MJ avoids liability for providing a lot of services (like LNP) and for charging us a host of fees and taxes that typically add $10 to a telephone bill. As long as the FCC agrees with this posture, as they have with FWD (the test case) and Skype, we win by being able to continue enjoying the service for $1.67 per month.

1.plug in the magicJack dongle
2.copy the "magicJack" folder from the magicJack drive to a drive on the harddrive
for example, "C:\magicJack"
Anyone figured out how to run it without the dongle on the Mac?

Error 401

Post by sword »

Getting the error 401 message on my MJ softphone without the MJ dongle plugged in. Worked fine like this (sans dongle) a few days ago. Doesn't do this when I plug in the MJ dongle. Works perfectly then, but I want to use my headset with softphone without having to plug in MJ. Is this a server thing or something else altogether?a few days ago.

You should recreate your dongleless environment by following the instructions again. Many had to do this after the 12/18 upgrade. And, a second time shortly after even though there wasn't an official upgrade.

It is just much more convenient
That, and also the usb port is free for other things that might be handy
Not to mention that it doesn't have to be passed from computer to computer
as you can duplicate the same thing on all computers as I do
Anyway, it does work very well.
Johnnyboy, what kind of table are you using? What OS is it running? Would this work on a Windows Mobile pocket PC or PDA?

Has more than one location been tried at the same time

Post by mitchgrdc »

Has a group of people tried to to use the dongleless method with the same serial number at the same time in more than one location (different IP address)? Or has it been tested with one dongle and one dongleless with the same situation? If yes, will they all show incoming calls and can calls be made to everyone except the same Mj phone number?

Has anyone found a way of using regular corded or cordless phone instead of mic/headphone set and soft phone in the dongless approach ? Any comment will be appreciated.

Cannot make International calls

Post by brit »

I have set up my computer to be dongle free and it works fine for domestic calls. When I tried to make an international call I get a recording "Please use area code" or nothing happens. I call 011+44+number for the UK. When I plug the dongle back in I can make International calls as normal.
Any suggestions.

Thanks Brit

Never mind, got it to work, must have been one of those days.

For going dongleless I use a bluetooth headset. Works fine, can walk away from the computer while talking.

dongle-less attempt

Post by mmontressor »

Hi I tried the procedure for connecting using a flash drive containing the software from the mj and when I try to connect it says to double-click the mj softphone to connect to the internet...any idea what I might have done wrong. I copies the software to the proper folders on the flash drive. created the shortcut on the flash drive and the only thing I changed was changing the path from my hard drive to my flash drive.

One question..could it be possible to use your telephone modem in the pc so you can use your handset telephone?? you know what I mean??
Sorry LisaD but they are 2 different interfaces... the MajicJack like the phone company is FXS (which includes DC power) while the modem plug is an FXO (which can only use power). However if you want to use your computer as a fax you should be able to connect the modem to the MajicJack and if its a voice-modem it should be able to place and receive calls as well.

If you copy the files from the good magicjack you will be getting the serial number of the good magicjack and therefore be using the good serial on 2 machines. You will need to fix the broken dongle at least enough to get the files from it to the laptop to use it on the laptop without the dongle, however when it is time for updates you will need to be able to reuse the broken dongle to update the files on the laptop once again so do not lose it or let it break again/more.

well this may be the very first time that I reply to one of these posts, but what prompted me to do this is the sheer stupidity ....you mean to tell me that you want to use the magicjack software out of the dongle...and in your PC....only to again connect your modem to a normal telephone...something which I think is difficult to work...and totally redundant since you could have just ...nothacked your magicjack and use it with that telephone in the first place......you fool

I think it is a GREAT idea.

How many people out there have kids? Why do parents make copies of DVDs, if they have already purchased the original; why not just use the original DVD? Because the originals eventually get scratched and can't be played or skip excessively. So you have to buy a replacement. So copying the DVD helps preserve that orignal and keeps cash in your pocket.

So if the MJ Dongle gets damaged (i.e. USB port is bent), will MJ replace it? Only if they want to. My guess is that it is rare.

So if the dongle gets damaged, from either kids plugging something else in to the back of the computer for games, or because your trying to get the MJ service to work, or because your moving the computer tower around, or etc, YOU have to go buy another one, and when you do, you have to buy the 1st year of service again. So bye bye $40 (plus tax). :(

By copying the software onto your PC and using a modem phone jack, you can help keep the MJ Dongle in its original shape, thus keeping the hole in your pocket from getting bigger. :D

I unbundled my MJ from the dongle via the instructions in this thread today. Now it seems my 911 button at the bottom of the app shows an X image and next to it, it says "Upgrading: please wait before selecting your location". If I run MJ from the dongle it does not do this. Has anyone else experienced this and how do you fix it?

That's exactly the same thing I get - but I really don't care because MJ works to make calls when I'm on the road w/o the dongle in a hotel room. If I need 911 I'll just pick up the hotel's phone. BTW, I've gotten the same message in place of 911 since I first tried the dongle-less method many months ago and nothing has changed. I was hoping that with the June software upgrade it might fix this, but it hasn't. Oh well.

Maybe there is a good reason that you have not posted more. Lisa D is certainly no fool for asking that question. A lot of people want to run their MJ 'dongle-less' so that they can install it on all 5 or 10 of their Notebooks and PDAs and use it on any of them. Doing so requires you to use a PC style headset which plugs into the SpkOut and MicIn plugs. Which is great. But if you wanted to plug in a normal RJ-11 corded phone like you can do with the MJ dongle you would be out of luck... except for that little RJ-11 modem jack that is on the side of so many notebooks. So its a FAIR QUESTION and one that does not deserve some ignorant scorn from you.

One way to solve the problem of wanting a more regular style phone to use Dongle-less is to get one of those inexpensive VOIP handsets which plug into the USB port. You can select them as your keystation device under one of the menus and people report that they work with MJ dongle-less.

It would be kinda neat.

Post by netdata »

I have used voice modems as voice mail and voice recognition IVR systems before, HAM operators use their sound card as a data modem over radio,
so its not so crazy, and would be sort of convenient, but alot of modems
only end up going into half duplex mode.

Anything is possible with technology.

Maybe not feasible.

But possible.

Hell this guy streamed VIDEO over his SOUNDCARD at rates of 100k
http://homepages.paradise.net.nz/peterfr2/QAM.htm

If I run across anything that would let you use your modem as a sound device I will post the link here.

In fact teleon made it work for Skype.

I tried teleon but it just crashed on me, it was junk for me.

As a side note:
Conexant modems are practically just soundcards with ring detection/hook off/on.

Those IVR systems I tinkered with would let me play "musak" or
music on hold, a wav file from my pc over the modem to the caller.
There used to be a handful of companies that made software like
that, but like modems, they went the way of the dinosaur.

Its been a while since I have coded anything using TAPI, but maybe I can throw a hack together.

Magic Jack on two computers?

Post by acethakr »

This only works for one computer at a time!

The cool thing is both computers can make a seperate call, like two different lines.

Only one computer can recieve a call!

Then on the computer that did not recieve the call, after a phone call is submitted to the computer which did recive,

It stopped working and I had to reset the magic jack.

Not a problem... works for what I wanted it to do!

NOTE: It does work in windows 7.

go into computer, tools, folder options, then check show hidden folders and files.

mjusbsp is located in your user files> AppData> Roaming

the other files are simply in computer, it is the only magic jack "folder" you can copy.

NOTE: make sure you scan down a few posts to read Johnyboy's update, he forgot to add it to his origal post, you can end a process in task manager.

Mmm.

I am running Win7 and my dongle is updated as of Sep 24. Not sure why but when I try to follow the steps to go dongless, I can't find the mjusbsp folder in the dongle.

The dongle shows up two drives:

'CD Drive (E:) magicJack' - this has 3 files, all named 'autorun' with extension exe, ico, inf and one named autorunu.exe

magicJack (G:) - this has the 'magicJack' and 'Profiles' folders

Does anybody know why I can't see 'mjusbsp' or 'magicJack.exe'?

I would love to do this hack but I can't match the MJ drive contents to the stuff in this hack's instructions. By the way, I have set my windows explorer to show all hidden files, etc.

Any directions will be appreciated!

Thanks!

OK some games especially online games have game guarding technology blah blah some may blocked magicjack. But my question is if my magic jack is no dial tone but i can dial on softphone. So it means if i have no dial tone no one will allowed to call at my number?

BTW is there a possibility if i use dongle free. so the game didnt detect magic jack usb? Also if i use dongle free. Can i leave my dongle at usb to use my phone? Thanks

Dongless MagicJack

Post by w6opi »

It appears that I must not be as bright as I had always thought!

I have tried for a couple of weeks to install the MagicJack without the Dongle. I loaded it on the desktop PC (WinXP Pro), and when I click on the shortcut it just sits there. I tried to load it from the subdir that the shortcut points to with the same results. I have tried every combination that I can think of to make it load with no success. I also loaded the program setup into two different laptops and the results are always the same.

Either everyone on the forum has agreed to gang up on me just for a good joke or I am missing something in the process. I even had my wife go through the setup with the same result.

I would really like to get it to operate and thank anyone that might assist.

I followed the instructions and it doesn't work. I keep getting the error message, Warning, you must plug magicjack into USB port.

Any ideas why i am getting this error?
