I'm trying to set the QOS on my Lynksys WRT54GS router. It asks for upstream bandwidth and the MAC address. Where do I find these?

You can determine your bandwidth by running a few tests at speedtest.net.

The MAC address of the computer running MJ can be found by opening a DOS (cmd) window, and typing "ipconfig /all". It will display something called the Physical Address.

However, I don't believe the limited QoS features of Linksys's firmware will help you much. It will only give priority to the machine MJ is running on (deprioritizing other machines). But, it will give priority to *all* traffic coming from that machine. If it's not a standalone, always-on MJ server, it won't help much. You'll need to run one of the software QoS tools too (mentioned on the wiki how-to for QoS).

DD-WRT supports the GS v6. (http://www.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv3/dd-wrt/hardware.html). You said in another thread that's what you have. And, as I said, I don't particularly care for DD-WRT. I thought it was more difficult to install. Seemed to have more risk of "bricking" the router (based on all the pages on the DD-WRT site describing how to unbrick). Its Layer 7 RTP filter probably doesn't work. And, there have been a lot of reports that its QoS isn't very effective (which matches my own experience, although it could have been because the L7 filter was broken).

But, it supports a lot of routers. Tomato is falling behind in this regard.

As I said in the other thread, the GL is a good router for Tomato. You can also use the ND (new driver) firmware which speeds up the wireless. (You have to test the corerev if it's 7 or above. All recent GLs seem to be 9. Ask on the Tomato forum for more info.).

Someone said they like the ASUS WL-520GU for Tomato. It's supposed to be very fast even with QoS enabled (39-40mbs).

Returned the WRT54GS, and bought a WRT54GL. Just upgraded to Tomato firmware. In the middle of settings now. Will update after I finish.
