No dialtone with fax machine

Post by canyon »

Everything else works great. However, the fax machine will not get a dialtone with MJ. I have restarted MJ, upgraded MJ, plugged fax machine directly into MJ, plugged fax machine into splitter into MJ, everything. I got it to send a fax ONE time about a month ago, but am going crazy now.

HP OfficeJet J6480 - error correction off, transmit speed 9600.

Thanks for the help.

Well, since everything else works great, you must have a bad telephone wire between your MJ and your fax machine. That's just about the only way, short of a failure inside your fax machine, for it not to get Dial Tone from the MJ.

Well, I just tried replacing the phone cord with a new one and still no go. There has to be a setting some place on this machine (the HP) to address this issue. I have seen other posters with the same problem but I've never seen anyone get a solution other than pure luck.

Could it be something stupid (I hope), like putting the phone cord into the fax machine's PHONE jack instead of its LINE jack?

Also, can a regular telephone get a Dial Tone by plugging it into the PHONE jack of the fax machine?

Here is what finally worked.....

I replaced the standard phone line going to the fax machine with a modular line cord (6-conductor). Send and receive both work flawlessly now.

While I don't doubt your results, I find it hard to find the logic in this fix since the MJ itself is only a 2-conductor???
Can anyone come up with an explanation as to how a 6-conductor cable solved this?
