voip service vs magic jack bandwith requirements

Post by callontom »

Hi folks,
I'm new to voip and trying to learn what i can. I checked my voip service providers spec requirements and they state I need 256KBs download and about half that for upload with a Linksys voice adapter to get a decent voice quality. Why so small a need, when i believe MJ needs so much more? thanks

MJ needs 80kbps up and down, 64kbps for the voice channels and 16kbps for the control. 256/128kbps seems a little overboard as a requirement, they may just suggest that so you have some bandwidth left for your other Internet needs. Plus there really should be no difference on the requirements for up and down, as its basically the same amount of data passing both ways.
