Newbie needs some help

Hey, I just hooked up my MJ last night and I love it, but I hate having to leave one of my laptops on at all times and was browsing around these forums for a network appliance solution.

What I have come down to is using a Linksys RTP300 for my service.

Here's my question tho, I noticed there is different versions that people say will/ won't work. But I found this on the internet and saw it as an easy fix ... i just wanted to find out from the pros around here if this version will work or not

The site says they are brand new and already unlocked.

Will I be able to use this with the instructions listed in this thread?

Hi netstat,

I don't believe you will have any problems with that RTP300 unit as it is unlocked. The price tag is seem a little steep to me. If you don't mind used unit you could save yourself a good sum of money. Check out any of the online auction sites. You should be able to find one for a lot less. Also that site states it has zero quantity in stock.

thanks for the quick response. I will look into finding a used one, just thought this might be worth the cash since its new and unmessed with.

Also, are there any reliability problems using MJ service on a network appliance like this? Like service going out if MJ tries to push a software update that the RTP300 won't see?

I have not heard of anyone having trouble as of yet, although you should be aware that this running the MagicJack on ATA is against its Terms Of Service. It has reported in this forum that MagicJack has changed users SIP credentials and these users had pull the new SIP credentials and update their ATA's. You should be aware that you must not run the MagicJack and the ATA device simultaneously as many forum members believe this will cause you to get your service terminated. If these potential inconveniences and hazards concern you a thin client configuration may be better suited for you.

yeah, it was kind of a toss up on ATA vs TC for me ... still kinda going back and forth on it.

My other idea was to run a TC with XPe with MJ installed as a service so I can also use the TC as a terminal server.

My only concern with that is that my MJ seems to be putting off a decent amount of heat, and it kinda scares me just a bit lol
