OT: Can Someone Recommend a Good (cheap) UPS?

Hurricane season is rapidly approaching. Just enough to run the thin client, cordless phone and monitor for a few hours in case of emergency. Good/cheap?

I live in Florida and have experienced several hurricanes. One thing I have noticed is when the power lines are down usually the cable and phone lines are down also. This assessment is based on my previous job that had a generator backup. I was able to check the incoming services for the above mentioned. My suggestion is to purchase a satellite telephone if you truly concerned you may encounter an emergency situation after a hurricane. Also remember most emergency services shut down during the storm and may not be available for several hours after. The best thing you can do is following the evacuation warnings if your area is in the hurricanes cone of probability. I only stayed as it was a requirement of my job and we were in building rated to withstand the expected winds.

I've been looking at these Noma units. They aren't UPS as such, but more a lead acid battery with inverter built in. Read the reviews at the link below, apparently they'll run a small TV, radio, lights for hours. Someone ran a fridge for 13 hrs. Another person has it in their car to run a portable Internet device. It should power your thin client and a small lamp for hours too. When the power cuts out, these switch in immediately.

In Canada the units go for $199CDN and can be had on sale for $150CDN. You should be able to find them in the US too. Unfortunately not really cheap. But should last you through many hurricane seasons.

Hmmm... FL is big. I bet you never lived in areas hit by Andrew or more recently, by Charlie. Even during Wilma lot of people around here lost their phone service. I had my phone service( with problems) but the people across the street did not. It was a chaos overall and we are talking about a hurricane borderline cat1-2.
If we get a REAL hurricane down here now, we will not be worrying too much about running thin client.
