Re: how is gizmo
Gizmo+GV+ATA = Unlimited incoming, $10 for 500 minutes callout, $4 a year for outgoing caller id display(displays my GV number when i call out). Gizmo might not be the cheapest callout but i have no problems with them and love the caller id option.ashvee wrote:After MJ stopped working with ATA , I am looking for different alternatives.

Re: how is gizmo
To be safe, I created a virtual credit card with paypal and use it with google checkout to make 1 time purchase and thats it. once you create an account with gizmo, you will get a number right away and when youre done purchasing minutes you will see it in your account right away.ashvee wrote:thnx both of you

I used Gizmo off-and-on for nearly three years, but really started using it when it was supported by Grand Central (now Google Voice). The only problem I ever had with it was the payment system. My credits would disappear and every time I added more money to my account, I had to write to them after a few days later and complain before the money would show up in my account (seems to be a common complaint among other Gizmo users). The call quality was acceptable when used with an ATA. You can also use their soft phone, which can support additional functions such as video.
One nice feature in using Gizmo with Google Voice is that you can initiate a call from Google Voice using your Gizmo number as the caller. Gizmo sees it as an incoming call so you can avoid paying the 1.9 cents/min for outbound calling. Of course, given time I'm sure they will "fix" that issue.
I recently purchased an Ooma since I finally got tired of the troubleshooting and issues that goes along with the cheaper VOIP services. Given the number of complaints in the Gizmo forums and the decreased amount of technical support, I sometimes wonder how they remain in business. Of course, I now wonder the same thing about Ooma, but at least Ooma sells a premium service, which is all profit for their company and they also make a lot from selling the equipment. I still have my Gizmo account, but rarely use it anymore. It's probably great for a low-cost backup service, but I would no longer use it as my primary home phone. If all you're looking for is a cheap alternative (especially for inbound), combining Gizmo with Google Voice can be a good solution.
