SALT WAS ADDED TO HASH

Post by srvctek »

Well I dont know how useful this info may be but i decided to grow a pair of balls and ask MJ themselves what they did with the last upgrade so here it is:

Chat InformationPlease wait for a site operator to respond.

Chat InformationYou are now chatting with 'Angel'

Angel: Hello, how may I help you?

bill: why doesnt Dan want us to be able to use our own device (ATA) ??? The sound quality is 1000% better!

Angel: What do you mean by that Bill?

bill: ata= sip adapter

Angel: One moment please...

bill: or analog telephone adapter

bill: they worked fine until the last upgrade

Angel: I see.

bill: you see what?

Angel: Its because the magicJack is not compatible with that device Bill.

bill: of course its not, that device allows you to not have to use the magicjack dongle at all

bill: you just needed your sip credentials

Angel: Sorry about that Bill.

Angel: Is there anything else I may help you with today?

bill: you have no technical knowledge do you?

Angel: Please disregard to that last message.

Angel: We have Bill.

bill: will you answer my original question then?

Angel: I apologize but I cant answer your question with full details Bill.

bill: how about partial details then?

bill: can i speak with a techical engineer then?

Angel: I can transfer you to a higher level of support Bill if you want.

bill: yes please, i need the highest level, someone who is cisco certified perhaps

Angel: Okay.

Angel: Thank you for your patience. I will transfer you to a higher level of support. Please hold while I transfer you.

Chat InformationPlease wait while I transfer the chat to the best suited site operator.

Chat InformationYou are now chatting with 'Hero'

Hero: Hello Bill.

bill: why doesnt Dan want us to be able to use our own device (ATA) ??? The sound quality is 1000% better! The last upgrade was designed to make it harder to connect using an ATA

bill: I loved magicjack when i could use my own adapter as well as thousands of others

Hero: I understand your concern Bill and thank you for addressing this to us. However, I apologize about that but we do not have the further information or answer your question why Sir Dan does not allow the customer to be able to use your ATA instead. I understand that it provide sound quality better, but for some reason whatever is his decision we do not have any idea why. However, we will note your concern and will address that question to him for him to be aware about this matter. If that is not too much for you.

bill: do you know if a salt was added in the new md5 hash?

Hero: It is added. May I know please why you ask?

bill: you must obviously know why i asked lol I just wanna be put back on the right track ;-)

Hero: Okay..

bill: any more details on the salt please?

bill: pretty please???

Hero: I apologize again about your concern Bill, however we do not have further information you needed as of this moment. Rest assured that your question will be address to the higher department for you. I apologize again..

bill: thanks

LOL, is that for real? I doubt they have anyone in the end-user support loop that has a clue what salt is...

It should be obvious that ATA use was stopped because MJ's business model doesn't allow it. Anyone could go to the retail store, buy an MJ, setup their ATA, return the MJ to the store, and use MJ for free for a year.

The only way MJ could allow ATA use is if either 1) it is the exclusive distributor, and can terminate service upon return. Or, 2) charges a monthly subscription, non-payment of which could trigger termination of service.

The way MJ sells the device through other retailers with a year of service, it creates a gaping hole for abuse.

Considering how many people disregarded the Terms of Service (and Dan's interest in serving ads), it doesn't strain the imagination to believe a significant number would game the system as described above.

LOL I've experienced a lot of bad tech support lately. Just last week I was on the phone with my fax software vendor sales rep telling him that "in my 15 years in IT, I've never seen the troubleshooting methodologies employed" by their half-assed 20-something know-it-all tech support.

Nothing like poking it with a stick.

Sorry. It was the way PHPbb interpreted a pasted URL. I should get in the habit of using the "url" tag.

Fixed.

Okay, just did the same thing as srvctek did and here is the response back I got from the tech:

Chat InformationPlease wait for a site operator to respond.
Chat InformationYou are now chatting with 'Cristine'
Cristine: Hello, how may I help you?
Aaron: Hello, I was wondering the status of MagicJack's update which blocked ATA's from working. Hero was going to look into why Mr. Dan decided to do so...has there been an answer?
Cristine: Hi, Aaron.
Cristine: Thank you for addressing your concern to us.
Cristine: May I know what you mean by that please?
Aaron: On June 8th, MagicJack released an update which ended up breaking all BYODs including ATAs. Hero was an individual from chat who was going to address the community's concern to Dan.
Cristine: Okay.
Cristine: Thank you for your patience. I will transfer you to a higher level of support. Please hold while I transfer you.
Aaron: Thank you.
Chat InformationPlease wait while I transfer the chat to the best suited site operator.
Chat InformationYou are now chatting with 'Rodney'
Rodney: Hi Aaron.
Aaron: Hello
Rodney: How are you?
Aaron: Well
Rodney: May I put you on hold for a moment as I review your previous chat/s for me to be able to assist you further on this matter?
Aaron: No problem.
Rodney: One moment please...
Rodney: Thank you for waiting Aaron.
Rodney: May I know if you still have the problem as of this time?
Aaron: Yes.
Rodney: Okay.
Rodney: Would it be fine with you if we continue the troubleshooting for this?
Aaron: Sure, but do understand that I am not referring to the use of the MagicJack dongle but rather a separate standalone device that I purchased called an ATA.
Aaron: Other users were able to use an ATA with the MagicJack service without any issues, and had better call clarity than with the dongle.
Aaron: Not to mention that one did not have to have their computer on in order to have phone service.
Rodney: Okay.
Rodney: Have you tried plugging the magicJack into a different computer?
Aaron: May I be transferred to a higher level of support please?
Rodney: I'm sorry Aaron but this is the last level of support. Higher from us does not handle chats, we just made reports for them to check. With regards to your issue, there's not update yet as of this time.
Aaron: Okay. It would be nice if an official statement came out from MagicJack and SJ Labs about the use the BYOD ATA though. I know many users including myself who would pay to have that "feature" offered to them.
Rodney: As of this time magicJack does not officially support that kind of feature yet. But, our engineers are still working on it. They are doing their best to release it very soon. However, they haven't given the time frame yet. Please chat us back or you may visit on our web site periodically for the updates.
Aaron: For now, I will have to make due with poorer service from the MagicJack dongle. Any information that you know about the update on June 8th though?
Rodney: That update was for the magicJack's software version and for the do not disturb option.
Aaron: Do you know what changes to the software besides the do not disturb option were made?
Aaron: The more detail, the better.
Rodney: It's on our ends changes and our engineers didn't give us much details on yet since they are still checking on this.
Aaron: Anything else that you know that might help me?
Rodney: My apologies on this, but not so far for now.
Rodney: none*
Aaron: Okay, thanks for your help.
Rodney: You are welcome. I haven't helped you much on this.
Rodney: I'll be making a follow up report on your issue for them to take a look on this.
Aaron: Should I expect any correspondence from them?
Aaron: Or should I contact chat again at a later time?
Rodney: You may just preferably chat us back since they don't take calls yet for now.
Aaron: Okay, thank you.
Rodney: You are welcome.
Rodney: Thank you for your patience and I do apologize for this inconvenience.

:D
The engineers probably get a kick out of those reports! They probably take a break from laughing at us on this forum to laugh at the my ATA quit working chats...

Your probably right, two easy ways I can think of would be to sell the jack for 20 then sell the service for another 20 when you take it home to register, Or change the password monthly forcing us to plug the jack in to get the credentials.
