Hanging and disappearing

I continue to have this crackling noise when I am connected which has been going on all week.

For the last two days I have noticed something else strange -- after a successful call, I hang up and it stays in hang up status (no pun intended) for about a min or two and then the who app disappears and when I try to restart it, it gives me the red window saying it isn't connected. Then I pull out MJ and put it back in and Vista gives me the scan message. Sometimes I can get MJ working again - other times I need to reboot the PC.

Here is some more data....

I rebooted and Vista flat out refused to recognize the MJ and I got the red window. I would hear the beeps saying Vista found the USB and the letter would appear in Windows explorer but that didn't make a difference. And then soon thereafter, the light in the MJ would go out.... that was on my studio desktop (I am a composer and producer).

I have a laptop which is nearly identical to the desktop in OS and the software installed. The laptop though is connected via wireless-N while the desktop is hardwired with cat 5 twisted pair.

Anyhow, I plugged MJ into the laptop and it worked right off and did not get stuck in hanging up mode.

There has got to be something different between the two that accounts for the radically different behavior.

Any ideas or have you seen these symptoms yourself (could the laptop have an older version of MJ software?)

By the way, NO crackling on the laptop at all though when it worked on the desktop it did crackle.
