Re-Use inactive magic jack
I have had amagic jack for a year now.
It came time to renew, they wouldn't let me renew, they put my acct. under review and won't let me renew.
So long story short, it's unusable now & I have to buy a new one.
I'm going out to buy a new one today @ one of the local stores that sells them.
I was wondering if I can maybe re-flash the old one /w the new one's info so that I can re-use it, or use it as a second one.
As it looks like the acct. and number are tied to the device, and you can't change any of it.
Any help would be appreciated.

My acct. was put "Under Review" because of the following.
1st and foremost, when I signed up under the "Free Trial" back when you had to have it mailed to you.
They said they wouldn't charge my card until the "Free" trial was up, short of freight.
But they charged my card anyway, like $57 which included the freight.
Well this put my already small card over limit as I'm very careful how much I put on it, as I always know how much is avail. Gotta be smart in this credit disaster. ;-)
So this cost me fees /w the CC co. as well as smearing my good track record.
So I had MJ reverse it minus the freight as they orig. promised.
So they did, but then the Moron's re-charged it, and reversed both of them.
Not knowing this at the time, in fact until I went to renew it, Thinking it was all settled I continued to use it as it worked fine. Even had some support req. I opened /w them early on. After explaining the situation to the CC Co. and working with them to get all the Fees reversed and such. I thought I was all good.
So I continued to use it, of course not knowing that MJ had actually reversed all of it, due to pending charges, reversals, it was a mess. Even the CC Co. got it wrong when they assessed it at the time.
They said I was good, with no adl. charge, and MJ said they'd charge it @ the end of the trial.
Obviously, and again unbeknownst to me at the time, they never charged it. No bill, no cut-off svc. nothing.
2.
So now I go to renew it and it won't renew. In fact this was several months ago, I have been without it that long due to slow cash flow.
MJ was all cloak and dagger about the issue when I inquired as to why my renewal was refused. They just said it was "under review" and to wait 48 business hrs. and they would get back to me.
I waited... and called... OH you have to wait 48hrs.... It's been 48hrs.... you have to wait. GRRR!!
So finally I got fed-up and called again demanding answers.
Finally I got someone who basically told me it was under review because they showed I had never paid for it. So I explained what had happened, yadda, yadda! Of course the rep I got said she wasn't supposed to tell me any of this, even though it was my acct. I wasn't allowed to know this "Privileged Information" but she was cool and told me anyway.
So I looked into it /w the CC Co. and sure enough, I found that in fact, after all their messing around, I did get it free. They never re-charged it after the free trial.
But I look @ that as being their problem, and they should have fixed it, or I shouldn't have been able to use it.
DUH!!
It's their stupidity and bad billing, lack of CSR, lack of anything system that caused it in the 1st place.
True it's a cool product, and I had little to no issues with it. But they need to get their act together.
3.
Of course they never got back to me, and I said to heck /w it!
So I'm without a working MJ now. And I have the money... I technically can't spare it right now, but I need to have LD.
So that's the story. ;-)
4. When I sign back up, aren't they going to block it if I sign it up under the same address? I was going to use a different name to be safe.
So not sure.
I hate to return things that way, it just drives up everyone's costs, and is the major cause of "New Policies" because of people that do that sort of thing. Buy, Switch & Return.
It goes against my Moral grain.
But I don't feel I should have to go through the whole mess again as It was their flub-up in the 1st. pl.
I certainly don't have the $75 or so it would be to renew + pay for the back year which they obviously aren't interested in having me pay.
What do you all think?

"What do you all think?"
I think you knew all along that you were getting it for free, and I think you should pay for the year you ripped them off for as well as for this next year coming up. If I heard a whiney story like that I would just close the account on you for good. Maybe just buy a new one with cash. You don't sound like you do too good with plastic.

Based on your story, I think it was their screw up, and ity_not wrote:My acct. was put "Under Review" because of the following.

was a big hassle for you. I don't think you owe them for
the previous year. That too was their screw up, and they're
not paying you for your time, are they? No. So...
I'd get a new one, set up a new account, and go on.
Don't cheat Wal-Mart, or anybody else, with the old one.
Just go forward. If you feel the need, write an email to Dan
Borislaw, and explain what happened, and why you don't feel
obligated to pay (ie: the hassle and time loss they caused you
was at least as costly as the cost of the device they provided
for a year). If that, in fact, is not the case, then pay them for
what you feel is the fair difference, and clear your conscience.
But do it honestly, and make an honest estimate.
that's what I think

andGo to walmart, buy a new one open it and put the old one in that package and return it as 'defective junk' that's what i did
I think I want to go take a shower. Folks are quick to accuse Dan of sleazy practices but have no problem rolling around in the gutter when it suits them. What do you think?
Throw it away and buy a new one, you knew you were getting free service all year but in the end it caught up to you, now you wanna screw a store. Dan put out a good product that is dirt cheap for what you get, we are just here looking for ways to improve the quality of the service not to steal it, so spend the 40 bucks and if you like it put out another 60 and that will give you 6 years of unlimited phone service.
Take an old phone cord, plug it in to the MagicJack. They make great cat toys that way!
Seriously unless you are willing to buck the system over and over and over and of course you will probably only leave frustrated to no end, buy the new device plug in and enjoy.
After all you used the service and got the hardware for free. You aren't out anything.
Register the new jack and be done. The MORE you can do the easy way in the automated system that is default by nature the less anything bad will happen. Like many startups, MJ heavily depends upon the ecommerce automation applications. If your transaction fits neatly into normal business nobody is going to notice and you will most likely have a smooth transaction this time around.

Believe me, I'm definitely not one to cheat the system.
Heck, I see candy in a dish on a counter @ a business and I ask if I can have one. Even if it is Halloween... Seriously!!
The only reason I started this thread, is because I was curious about re-purposing the device, as I have always wanted a second one, but It dawned on me that it's basically locked.
IE. You can't re-assign it to another number or acct.
SO I was wondering if there was a way.
I probably wasn't to clear.. I tend to do that. I ramble!
Also...
I was just curious about the statements made of the bait and switch on the replies.
I'm one of those people, that if I did that, I'd get hosed... somehow.
Also to set the record straight, whether anyone actually believes me or not, I was completely un-aware that they had not charged it.
Because there was a pending charge when I last looked at it, and I had made a CC payment on my balance, so there was plenty of money in there for the charge to go through.
I only look @ my transactions for my card if I think the balance is off, or something looks funny or if there's a dispute /w a charge as In the case with the MJ charges.
So yeah, I'm happy to go buy one and use it. I liked it, it was kinda retarded @ times when it wouldn't dial certain numbers and I'd have to try over & over. AFAIK that was the only problem I ever had with it. Call quality was great. But who can really complain for $20/yr.
If I had the money, I would just pay them for the back year and the next year.
But really it's principle, I spent probably about 5-6hrs dinking around with them on it. If they aren't even smart enough to bill me for it, and correct it right in the 1st place, then they don't deserve it.
If however they had billed me, or called me and told me that they showed I hadn't paid. I would have gladly ponied up.
To me it's like going down and buying a "ShamWow", they charge your card $19.95.. oh but wait. They charged it twice.. GRR!
So y ou dispute it, and they reverse both charges, then charge it again.
But wait... the 3rd charge drops off... they never get their money.
I don't know, weeks have passed, I should get a bill.
That's what I'd do with a client.
Who doesn't bill for a svc. What the Heck ??
But then again I never have double charged anything.
Just my 2 cents.

allowed for the possibility that you might feel you got the better
end on the deal. That's up to you to judge, because you were the
one who had to deal with MJ on the issue, and only you know the
amount of hassle and harrassment they put you through (if any).
People are too often quick to assume you would act how [perhaps] *they*
do. I understand, because I have gotten the same treatment in this
regard at times. People judge that you think and act like "everyone else."
There *are* some good, honest...call them naive people still in this world,
so until you prove otherwise, I'm gonna believe you...

No I didn't have a problem with your post, it was extremely professional and not full of emotion. Just neutral as it should be!

I appreciate your open mindedness.
One of these days I'll get around to making a blog showing all my dealings with Philips, Samsung, Sears, etc... over the years.
I really seem to get hosed when I buy a product, no matter how nice or good it is.
The universe knows I'm a tech... so it hoses me I guess. =-)
I'll be buying a new one @ full price, as soon as I scrape together the cash, & keeping it for as long as MJ is around & worth using.
Plus I'll be telling everyone I know to use it. !!
I have posted detailed instructions on how to accomplish this. I have even uploaded the necessary software that is needed.nestman wrote:How do I turn my MJ into something that will work with Skype? My MJ is about to renew and I'm tried of all the problems.

Well, I personally believe (and this is my opinion) that you still should pay for the magicjack device. It only costs 40 bucks and you got a free year for buying the hardware. That's the cost of a monthly phone bill, even if you where inconvenienced you should not get a free year of telephone service. Just email Dan, explain what happened, tell him you're willing to pay for the device and renew it for a second year and I'm sure he will get it fixed for you ASAP. Stay away from Customer Service.
That way, you retain your service and clear your conscience.
If that doesn't work, at least you can say you tried, then go buy a new magicjack.
If you're worried they will block your new magicjack, you can use a different name, email and address. You can also go into your old magicjack and change the email and the address, that way you can still use the old information. Either way, I doubt they will do anything. Just don't use the same email address, because that will tie both accounts together on the my.magicjack website. Even if you use the same email, they probably wont do anything.
