I am using it because it seems safer to have instead of plugging it in direct. I just don't want it to snap off or be in the way back there if it gets snagged on a wire.
Is it okay to use it?
Should we use the USB Extension Cord?

Typically, it it suggested you plug in the dongle directly, and refrain from using the extension.
I, however, share your concern with the dongle snapping off or causing damage to the USB port on my laptop. This does not seem to be as much of an issue on a desktop where the dongle can be plugged into a rear USB port. On a laptop, however, it's more likely to be an issue.
I have found no degradation in quality using the extension.

Pardon me for dropping in during the middle of the thread ... please consider the following;Gear-Monkey wrote:I have removed the extension cord and plugged the dongle directly into the USB. I have not noticed any change in quality.
My phone still has burps (/breakups or loss of signal?), beeps and echo. But I am not complaining because it's cheap service!! It's worth the money, fo sho!
Change mj process level,
Dedicated host,
CAT 5 to the router,
QoS on the router or upgraded router.
Again, pardon the intrusion as you my have already done these things. If not, the above actions did yield improvements in my set-up.
