New To MagicJack

Post by faithofgdod »

I am new to MagicJack and mine is in the mail as I type this. Since I am a newbie, I am wondering if there is any software, settings, or information I should have so I set it up in the most efficient manner. My main goal is to just make clear calls and receive them with no problem. I have a HP m8407c (Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600, 4GB RAM, and Windows Vista x64). Hopefully that is enough information to go on. Thanks in advance for your advice!

One suggestion. READ READ READ..... As much as you can here. I did that before I got my MJ and learned A LOT from this forum!!

Take the time, and yes it will take you a while to go through the topics here, but trust me it is WELL worth your while!!

Try to get a feel for the viability of your internet connection as to the stability required for VOIP. Go run the following evaluations.

http://myvoipspeed.visualware.com/ pick a location near you

www.testyourvoip.com

The results derived from testing will establish whether your IP is suitable for a decent digital voice call. This is the single most important factor that will impact your MJ (or any other voip provider) experience.

Post back here if you need help evaluating the results

Good luck

Be sure to open the softphone menu to adjust the volume controls for better clarity.

There is something written for "newbies" (new to magicjack). But if you have problem that you cannot solve and get no support from MJ, your in the right place. Ask, lets see what we can do to help.

Thanks It got a 4.4 MOS, but I expected it should be fine with FIOS. So it should pretty much work out of the box without anything needing tweaking?

Excellent information! I am a little skeptical after a bad experience with another VOIP provider. I look forward to getting my MJ tomorrow and trying it out! :D

FIOS is the ideal. Great bandwidth, normally very low latencies works well with VOIP and online gaming!!!

Congrats

I installed it. In about 2-3 minutes it had downloaded the Vista update and I was registering the number. It works perfectly. I am very impressed so far. I had very low expectations, just because I have been burned by previous VOIP experiences.

Did I speak too soon? I just called and it seems I got in on someone else's call and they were talking about the lame hold music with MagicJack. Is this a regular problem? Is there a way to fix it? The last thing I want is to have to hang up and redial to get out of other people's calls.

Wild! Never had that happen except back in the party-line days, and the
beginnings of cell service... :) (Ooouch.... am I really that old *already*???)
