Talking into a fan
With latest upgrade new twist:
Sound of other person sounds like talking into a fan. Very constant and rapid garble, not the typical garble of bogged down cpu or internet at all. This happens after 2 or three calls in middle of call. The unacceptable work around is: to restart mj via menu.

1) Play with the audio settings on the advanced menu. They should be only 1/3 of the way up but you might need to adjust them for your particular setup.
2) Try disconnecting the phone from the MJ and making calls from the softphone using a headset or just a microphone. Try it and see if there is any difference.
3) Try using another phone? If you scan this forum you'll see that users have had a large variety of success/failure with various phones. Some cordless phones work great and some don't work at all. Most corded phones work w/o any problems. If you're using a cordless phone, try swapping to a corded phone and see if that makes a difference. Also if you have another cordless phone (different make/model) you might try that too.
4) Update Your Softwear: http://www.magicjack.com/2/magicfix.asp
5) Try disabling the power management feature in each of the USB root hubs on your computer. For Windows XP go into the device manager for hardware and find the USB controller and hit the + sign to expand the listing. Under each USB root hub right click and pull up properties...Find the power management option and uncheck the box that says "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power." Again make sure you do this for each of the USB root hubs listed.
6) Try a POWERED USB HUB. ( Sometimes this helps )
7) Disable Microsoft Defender ( Seems to work for some )
Do Not Use The Crappy USB Extension Cord That Came With MagicJack!

1) A quality high-speed Internet connection will ensure a clear voice quality.
( Test it at: http://myspeed.visualware.com/voip/ )
If you are experiencing an audio issue not related to your Internet connection:
Please try connecting your magicJack to a different USB port and try again
2) If that does not work:
Please turn of your modem and router (if you are using one) for 3 minutes. Then turn them back on again. Now unplug your magicJack and plug back it back in. After it starts up again, try to make a phone call.
3) If that does not work:
Please try using a different phone with your magicJack ( Corded Phone ) Not Wireless
4) If that does not work:
Right click on My Computer
Click Properties
Click the Advanced Tab
Under Performance, click Settings
Click the Advanced tab
Under Processor Scheduling, check the round button called Background Services
Click Apply
Click OK
Click OK again.
Now restart your magicJack and try a couple of calls to see if the quality improves.
5) If that does not work:
Please make sure that you have a good Ethernet cable connected from either your router/modem to your computer or from your modem to your router. Although some low priced Ethernet cables can handle Internet connections without any issues, they might affect the quality of your phone calls.
6) If that does not work:
If you are using the optional USB cord, please try without it.
7) Goto device manager and Change Your Network Adapter Settings..
A) Advanced Options Change: No - Flow Control ( Disabled )
( Sometimes This Helps )
B) Also Change Your Network Adapter Power Settings : Un-Check ( Save Power )

Just looking at your helpful and thoughtful post before going off to work. Most of these are covered (second phone, to performance, to I opts). I do suspect, since aircard option introduced, it could be sound card/mixer related or more likely a codec crash since obviously aircard compresses audio more.
We can rule out Internet, CPU, memory, or a hardware router error, because restarting MJ always fixes problem and the fan blade sound shredding reproduction is constant once started.
However, softphone iisn't an option, since wife uses cordless phone and likes freedom to roam house. The sound card of the dongle needs to work for MJ to work.
I will try lowering volume later.
I was playing with using the aircard setting to see if it allows me to surf with less interference either way. I can barely tell the difference, and quality blows verizon, nextel, or alltel cell quality away. But the problem happens on both settings, even after restarting MJ. I also noticed, at least yesterday, I can usually trigger by pulling a bunch of weather pages at once. But the problem is constant and persists after all pages are lowered and only MJ is pulling bandwidth.

Jaden: Hi there Dennis.
dennis: I ran a dump test and it said I was using columbus proxy. reason I ran test and was concerned is that after running last upgrade after a few calls, incoming voice sounds like a person talking into a fan and becomes constant, unlike normal garble. restarting MJ always fixes the issue. This means %100 MJ software issue or a proxy change in last upgrade. So since I can't get you to rewrite the upgrade.exe, I would like to see if you can change my default proxy to something closer. dennis: Did you check if anything can be moved on your end? I was told I could ask for a different proxy.
Jaden: Dennis, the system will automatically choose the best proxy with the shortest path and latency possible.
dennis: Any ideas why latest upgrade.exe does the fan sound on incoming calls?
dennis: it happens randomly, but persists constantly once started. Restarting Always fixes it. Either a codec crash or proxy issue. or some sound card driver for the dongle crash
dennis: I am guessing codec bug, since new version does the 3g. BUt happens on both settings
dennis: I don't have headset, but not an option anyway.
dennis: so only using dongle. Never happened before last upgrade.exe
dennis: I don't think other end hears the audio shredding. but yet to test by calling the echo number. Once it starts, it persists on next call, etc. Until MJ is restarted.
Jaden: I see. Sorry to her that Dennis. It is just a slight glitch but it won't happen again not unless if our engineers would decide to do the updates again.
dennis: Not sure what you mean. I am hoping problem can be pinned down and fixed on next ugrade. It happens roughly about every third call (must hang up and restart mj to fix).
dennis: Is this a known issue?
Jaden: Sure. No problem with that Dennis.
Jaden: Yes, since the updates started.
dennis: Do you know when they might get a fix for it?
Jaden: Yes.
Jaden: One moment please...
Jaden: Okay, thank you for waiting.
Jaden: All you need to do is restart your computer system but unplug the magicjack first then plug it in once the computer is up and running then try a test cal.
Jaden: call*
dennis: call star?
Jaden: What do you mean?
dennis: never mind. I will try rebooting and if problem hits again, I will wait for a fix.

I read wiki on proxy change. Until someone writes a bat file to set a proxy and then another bat to undo changes, I don't see this a remotely practical since you must manually block 40 proxies to get a preferred one. then if some ip changes, you are screwed and must rewiki and reunblock. You need to be extremely hard core and dedicate a half day to try this, as we all know things never go smoothly as they appear.
I downloaded magic block to test to see if would help. It can't prevent the pop ups, but will hide after a few milliseconds. This is bad since the interface seems to be the source cause of the incoming voice disintegrating permanently (until restart) into a shreded fan like, hard to understand, stuttery, garbly, mess.
But I the progress tonight of playing was seeing, with magic block on, the incoming calls would %100 of time disintegrate in second incoming call--not on first!! Strange not on first. I tried making outgoing call between incoming and still the disintegration on second incoming. The outgoing calls seem to work fine for me as long as I don't go looking at the menus or alt tabbing on and off the ap.
Workaround: use magic block + restart after each incoming call; or use ooma or skype.
I would say power issue of ringer, if first incoming call still messed things up, or if outgoing didn't often cause shreding with any UI interface.

degarb, just curious, if you open your taskmanager and select the performance tab, what does the chart tell you? Is your MJ causing CPU fluctuations? How about after the first incoming call or after the second?
The reason I'm asking is that mine shows CPU fluctuations during a call, which is normal, but they continue after I hang up, which is not. I'm thinking this might have something to do with the voice degredation. MJ doesn't appear to be disconnecting and continues to use the CPU.
I can get these "after hang up" CPU fluctuations to stop by calling the Echo number (909 390 0003) from my contacts list. I let it connect for a second or two and then end the call.

I will look more closely at the cpu fluctuations tonight.
This morning I wrote an autohotkey script (download autohotkey.exe, install, save script to mjrestart.ahk on desktop with notepad.) The script allows us restart Magic jack by dialing the weather forcast and hang up.
Also been using magicblock to stablize during outgoing calls, since any menu use during a call or alt tabbing on/off mj causes the disintegration .
You must locate the autorun on the mj drive and change drive letter and change the trigger phone numer:
settitlematchmode,slow
#singleinstance, force
DetectHiddenWindows, On
loop:
sleep, 300
ifwinexist,,9093900003
{
wait4hang:
Sleep, 500
;sleep, 84000
ifwinnotexist,,9093900003
{
process, close, magicJack.exe
sleep, 12000
run, X:\autorun.exe
goto,loop
}
goto,wait4hang

I bought a new mjack. Same issue on the machine: second incoming call shreds incoming voice (like fan would) %100 of time and can trigger by clicking on menus.
I am half abandoning MagicJack because of this. Certainly won't be recommending it. I disabled forwarding from google voice to disable most incoming calls and using mjblock to hide the gui.
XP pro sp3. It aint the network card or any settings. This is a software bug on their code. I am guessing since it is a stable rapid frequency dropout, it could be some sampling bug introduced with the 3g support.
