Magic jack that plugs into router

Post by brit »

A friend in England told me he got what seems like a magic jack that plug directly into his router so his computer does not have to be on to make a call, it works directly through the router.
Does anybody know of something similar available in the USA. He could not remember the name of the product as he gave it to his son who lives in Australia and said the store that sold it does not have them anymore.

That device is called an ATA (Analogue Terminal Adapter), and is discussed widely here in this forum.

So netTALK is a competitor to MJ? Is the quality better? Does it work with a Mac?

Thanks!

the https://www.tk6000.com/ web page bears striking similarities to the MJ page. Anyone else think the same ?

Yes, but why would they make two similar products?

Interesting finding:

Look closely at the bottom left corner where the RJ-45 connector is.

Very interesting! But they spelled "magic" wrong. Wonder why?

"MagJack" copy writed brand name for Bell Strewart connector any one can purchase to install into their product - does NOT indicated any relationship to "MagicJack". Internet search is a wonderfull thing, isn't it?

I have a linksys router and i put a connector on my magic jack that converts it to the connection on the back of the router and i was able to connect it in but the blue light did not come on, does this mean that I might need a "powered USB" hub to connect to then connect it to the router in order to get the magic jack to work without connecting it to a computer.

MJ NEEDS a PC AND it's operating system to work ( UNLESS you are using an ATA) BUT if you JUST want to use the MJ as it is, you can NOT plug it into a router and expect it to work, sorry.

ok here is another question, I have my linksys router, Wireless G and I found at a thrift store in Wisconsin a Linksys RPT300 router (unopened box, never used) and I used the program to erase the Vonyage information that was in the voice section of that router. Could I connect the RPT300 to the Wireless G router to use the magic jack? Or do I have to have one or the other.
