Avoid losing your contacts ! HOW TO COPY YOUR CONTACT LIST

Post by MJ Problem Solver »

I use XP with SP3 ( Vista or Windows 7 may be a little different)
YOU MUST COPY YOUR ADDRESS BOOK FILE ! (Contact List)
1) Double click "my computer"
2) Look under the category "devices with removable storage"
3) There will be two Magic Jack drives ( if you are experiencing problems...you will see only one, but the second one is there...it is just not labeled Magic Jack...it may be called drive E: or F: or G: etc)
4) You are looking for the Magic Jack drive that is formattable....right click on each drive to see which is formattable (DO NOT FORMAT) To make sure you have the correct drive you can right click...go down to properties...capacity of the drive should be 17.5 MB (once you do this one time then you will know which drive to go to)
5) Double click the 17.5 MB capacity Magic Jack drive
6) Then double click on the folder Magic Jack
7) There you will see a folder labeled addressbook.XML
8) To copy this folder...the easiest way is to drag it to "my documents"
9) or you can drag to your desktop
10) It will not remove the addressbook.xml file from the folder...it will only copy it.....

Hope this helps everyone..........
I was mocked and treated rudely on this board for only having a few posts and stating that I was able to solve MJ problems....Sorry, but I only found this forum a few days ago...
I have been a Magic Jack user since 2007.
Do you get "you must plug into a USB port" error ??
Do you get "Broken Storage" error ??
Tired of talking to support for hours ??!
Lost your contacts ??!
I can have you up and running in about 5 minutes !

This is a great post, and IMO, very necessary. Although I'm not very conscientious about back ups in general, I never thought I would need to back up my MJ address list. For one thing, I didn't think there was anything in there of vast importance. Secondly, I figured that anything I needed to replace could be found readily. Sort of true.

But mostly, I never thought it would be necessary. I just don't have a lot of problems with my MJ. Plug-and-play; that's my motto.

Until one day I saw all my contacts and call history evaporate. Compared to world hunger, not a big problem but it is an unnecessary pain. Especially when you realize how easy it is to back them up. Thanks for posting.

Hi-

I think your answer and problem to solving about our contacts is great. I lost all of mine a few days ago, when one of the techs at MJ deleted them, with my permission.
But I still have the problems after days and days of talking to them, I am on my second phone and voice quality is poor and seems to break up. Do you have an answer for that. I have spent over 15 hours on the phone with MJ and just will not do it again. I am waiting for a new MJ, sent I sent back the other one.

Any help would be appreciated.

contact list problem

Post by dmfh »

thanks for the info showing how to locate the contact list I really appreciate the help.

When i started my MJ today it is showing my contact list as "contact is empty"...I was not a happy camper. So I located it using your directions to find it fully intact in .xml format.....but my MJ is stating it's empty (in softphone contact window) so I am not sure how to get it to show up again.

Any idea's? :?:

Great idea to back things but may I suggest you copy the entire contents of the drive instead of just you address book. That way if you have to format your magicjack later you'll have all the contents to simply copy back to it.
