fax setup

How do I set up my computer to fax through the Magic Jack. I am running XP (Home, SP 3 and I do not have a fax machine, just a 3-in-one (Printer-scanner-copier). I would have to fax directly from my computer.

When I try to use the Fax configuration wizard, it asks me to assign a modem to use. How do I establish the Magic jack as the modem and what physical connections are needed, if any?

You gotta use your real, physical modem in your computer and then connect it to the magicjack

Correct, MJ is not a modem. It is a phone line. You would connect a fax machine or fax modem to it just like you would connect to a phone line in your house.

Ok, Let me make sure I've got this right:-

I would have it set up the same way as it had been before when I had the land line phone, except that instead of having a cord from the wall jack going into the "Line in" jack on my computer, I would run the cord from the Magic Jack to the "Line in" jack on the computer?

And I would have my telephone handset plugged into the "line out" jack on the back of my computer, just like I had it before?

and I would be using my computer modem to send the fax just like before?

That is basically how you would connect the hardware together; however, people have had varying success in faxing with MJ. You might search the forum to see what some have done to get faxing to work with MJ.

Well - the first step is to get it connected up properly, so thanks for the clarification on that. Now, I'll give it a try and if I have problems, I'll have to do some troubleshooting.

since you don't have a fax machine, here is what I would recommend. I got a "used" Brother 575 fax machine (From the Goodwill store, I paid $6.24 for it and nothing was wrong with it (except it needed new fax film)). I bought this back in May and noticed that I had a 75% fax success rate with it.

I noticed about 3 weeks ago that EVERY fax I sent out was successful. I did two (2) faxes today and they both went thru with flying colors. Though I have two setting that I do to ensure that I have no issues with faxing out:

Overseas mode=Yes
Resolution=Photo or S. Fine

Plug one end of your phone line into the Magicjack and the other end into the telephone or modem plug in (not to be confused with you internet cable plug in). It may take a few times for the fax to go through but I have done it successfully.
