Any thoughts when ISP has ping issues?

Post by eggdashure »

Hey all,

First time poster here! 8)

Ok, here is a quick question...after some explanation.

My ISP (Bresnan Communications in Grand Junction, CO) has been struggling to find an answer on their end with poor pings. Long story short, I found a local ISP server where the ping starts out at 7ms, 8ms and after a bit of time jumps up to 600ms, sometimes over 1000ms then after 3 to 6 seconds comes back down, this repeats every 20 seconds or so. I confronted Bresnan with it and they have "engineers looking into it." So it may never get fixed.

My wife's only means of voice communication is our MJ. She can be talking along and all of a sudden her voice becomes digitized and garbled. Eventually, as the diagnosis of the server suggests, ping times come back in line and everything is fine again.

On to my question, I really doubt there is anything I can do in this instance being an ISP issue. But do you guys have any suggestions to improve the service?

I have already added QoS priority to my router. (Linksys WRT110) I will keep scouring the forum to see what I can dig up.

Thanks!

Try pinging different MJ servers at different times of the day and see what your results are. For a list of available servers go to the MJ wiki http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/MagicJack The only servers that have changed are Washington is now 216.234.66.8, Newark is 216.234.65.8 and Boston is 216.234.66.8 the rest on the list is correct. Good Luck and keep us posted.

Ok, but pinging different servers won't change the local server I am having issues with. This is a server in my town (gateway from the town to the backbone as I understand it) that is struggling, so pings will always suffer no matter which MJ server I ping.

I was hoping for a solution / improvement that can help in poor ping times.

You can try connecting to different MJ servers to see if any of them give you better results with your local isp's server. I have had to block a few MJ servers to get my calls to sound as best they can. I can get better ping times to Chicago and Minneapolis than I can to Memphis and Nashville. I live in NC. You could also see if your local isp can switch your server you connect to if it's at all possible.

Ok, I see where you are going now. I will definitely try configuring the MJ for the servers that provide the best ping results. Thanks for...your persistence.
