Are you complaining about the cost of a computer, the power to run it, or that you even need a computer to begin with? MJ was very clear in its ads (probably the only thing they were clear about) - you require a PC running XP or VISTA or a MAC to make MJ work. If you are worrying about the extra $1/month you'll pay in electricity, invest in a laptop or a thin client. Otherwise don't blame anyone since you were told you needed a computer.

Dan,
Your product is ok under the constraints that it can be used, but it was great when it worked with my Gizmo. The Sound quality was excellent, i didn't have to worry about damage to your dongle with it hanging off the side of my laptop, and it was Greener without needing to run my computer all the time.

I had just purchased a second magicjack just days before the 'upgrade' that forced me back to the dongle. I guess I will need to return it while I can, as I can't afford to wait for someone to fix your 'upgrade' which may never happen.

Even with a good size laptop a powered usb hub and a router it is much, much more than that and with the increased costs of air conditioning( to remove the additional heat from power burned) it is actually a lot.
But off course, we all knew that before we bought the device.

Cost to run 24/7

Post by bigonVOIP »

From http://www.dslreports.com/faq/2404 :
The following are based on the following figures.

That all of the PSU's run at 80% efficiency, about average, and that each Kw/h of electricity will cost $0.06c per Kw/h.

Please note that you will need to adjust the calculation for your given tarrif of costs from your electricity supplier. This information will be available on your electricity bill.

235w PSU

Assumed maximum demand due to losses. 293w

In one calendar month this would consume 211.6632 Kw/h

at a cost of 0.06c per Kw/h, the maximum cost is $12.70

300w PSU

Assumed maximum demand due to losses. 375w

In one calendar month this would consume 270.90 Kw/h

at a cost of 0.06c per Kw/h, the maximum cost is $16.25

350w PSU

Assumed maximum demand due to losses. 437.5w

In one calendar month this would consume 316.050Kw/h

at a cost of 0.06c per Kw/h, the maximum cost is $18.96

400w PSU

Assumed maximum demand due to losses. 500w

In one calendar month this would consume 361.20Kw/h

at a cost of 0.06c per Kw/h, the maximum cost is $21.67

450w PSU

Assumed maximum demand due to losses. 562.5w

In one calendar month this would consume 406.35Kw/h

at a cost of 0.06c per Kw/h, the maximum cost is $24.38

500w PSU

Assumed maximum demand due to losses. 625w

In one calendar month this would consume 451.50Kw/h

at a cost of 0.06c per Kw/h, the maximum cost is $27.09

As you can see the costs escalate incrementally as you would expect. These costs do not include the cost of running a monitor, however as this is not on 24 hours a day these costs are minimal, a few extra dollars a month. The figures quoted above are only if the machine is running at maximum potential load at all times. In most cases the machine will probably consume only about 50% of the estimated maximum and thus cost, however this will vary due to hardware differences and usage. The maximum you can use is listed above and is accurate for consumed power, actual cost will vary with supplier costs per Kw/h.

Hope this is of help to those whose spouses, partners or parents are concerned about the cost of allowing a machine to run 24/7.

The following are based on the following figures.
That FAQ is for SETI, in that case, the system will be 100% loaded even on "idle", while in case of MJ, there will be virtually no load thus consumes much LESS power. Even for SETI, the math is wrong as some has pointed:

"This is wrong calculation. If power supply has 300W it does not mean it will consume it all the time. This is _maximum_ power which PSU can provide. Real consuming will be much less."

New computers are very power friendly when idle, especially when there is no gaming video card in the system

redo the math yourself.

My power costs 16.5 cents per kwh in the summer and 14.5 cents per kwh the rest of the year. In January 2011 it is expected to make a large increase when the rate caps are removed.

Where do you get power for 6 cents per kwh?

Post subject: How magic jack Lost my business and others peoples too....
Here's some information to add to the debate. I was speaking to the manager/clerk in the local Radio Shack about MJ and the feedback he gets from customers re: quality, etc. Turns out he was really sold on MJ from his experience as a Marine deployed overseas using it to call family and friends. Recently he got one for his mother-in-law, so she and his wife could have extended chats, since the mother-in-law is out of the country.

But what I thought more interesting was he said a local pharmaceutical company bought 300 of them at one whack for their field reps to use with their company issue laptops in place of cell phones as a cost cutting measure. I wonder how many other companies are using MJ's for business.

Unless you use MJ outside of your home, the financial effect of heating up your dwelling with all the electric consumption will be more significant than the one caused by the consumtion itself. This is not nickel and diming.
It is surprising how simplistic the calculation of savings can be and the real life results speak for themselves, although many people do not notice.
I wonder how many other companies are using MJ's for business.
A lot of them, although I personally know only about small businesses who use it as a second line.
It is all about cost/benefit. For me, MJ works great and in spite of all complaints, I would hate to lose it.
