Using an external modem through the MJ for downloading

Post by Security101 »

First, thanks to Admin for fixing the loggin issue I had!

I need to use an external 1200 baud modem to contact my clients systems to provide downloading and uploading operations. Normally I need a standard POTS line to do this.

Question: Can I connect this modem to the MJ and communicate in this fashion? Is there an actual dial tone? Ring voltage?

Thanks in advance!

There is certainly nothing to keep you from trying. Make sure you focus your efforts on using a major brand EXTERNAL modem and that you have the modem's documentation. You may be surprised at the results, especially at 1200baud.

Good luck

Thanks for the reply Crackerjack!

I have not purchased this yet so it's kinda hard to try it - just looking at my options before dropping land lines (POTS) and switching to VOIP of some sort.

The downloading I need to do is very important (for security/fire system programming) and as such must be a quality download each time. With all the possible issues (I perceive) I probably shouldn't consider this option but you folks may know better or know that it would reliably send data at that baud...

You say I may be surprised - as in it may work or it might not - I'm not clear

Thanks again,

Jim
