Does Changing Your Number Change MJ's Server?

Post by Bill Smith »

I've seen several posts about forcing MJ to use a different server. I live in the east. If I change the number to a different location, do I then access a different MJ server?

I've seen reports here that confirm your statement. The server utilized is based on the area code of your phone number, not your location.

Some users who were experiencing problems with clarity, subsequently had better call quality after changing phone numbers to a different area code.

Without troubleshooting first, there is no guarantee that your proxy server is the cause of any quality issues you are experiencing.

Remember, you only get one free number change.

I've only had my Magicjack for a month or so and when I first picked a number if was a California number (wife wanted to be in Beverly Hills!). My proxy server was set for LA. But I was experiencing a lot of choppy audio issues with the device. And living in Canada, I found that calling some 800 numbers meant that the pacific timezone affected hours of service, so after a bit of pushing I convinced her to change to a NY number in the eastern timezone, mainly to see if it would fix the choppy audio (it didn't). I checked the settings and my proxy remained the same for at least a week, at which point I bought an ATA and started using my own settings. The ATA fixed the audio issues nicely and when I switched to the NY proxy manually I found the jitter/lag on the line dropped to a more acceptable level too.

Too bad the MJ dongle didn't update my proxy.
