Post by UPdownLoAD »

Let me first start out by saying that MagicJack has/had been working perfectly, but I needed to change area codes because I am moving soon. That said, enjoy the transcript, and try not to scream in frustration while reading!!

Polly: Hello, how may I help you?
Me: I am having a proxy server error ever since I changed my phone number/area code. The error is 400. I have done all of the basic troubleshooting, such as running magic fix, rebooting, uninstalling, etc. The error is on your end
Polly: Thank you for addressing your concern can I have your magic jack number please?
Ne: 972-793-XXXX
Polly: Thank you..
Polly: May I know if what is the status of you firewall?
Me: It's a Texas number, it previously was 614-859-XXXX which was an Ohio number. I know that it uses a different proxy server
Polly: I see.
Polly: Please try to turn off your firewall.
Me: No firewall what-so-ever. None on the PC, none on the modem. MagicJack was working just fine until I changed the number. Nothing has changed since that
Me: I have also tried using the MagicJack on 3 different PCs
Polly: Please click start button
Polly: Click run, type control panel,
Polly: Double click windows firewall.
Polly: Click the exceptions tab
Polly: Click the add ports button.
Polly: Type Mj1 fo name and 5060 for the port.
Polly: Please click the UDP radio button and click OK button.
Polly: PLease click again the add ports button.
Polly: Type Mj2 for name and 5070 for the ports.
Polly: Click the UDP radio button and click ok.
Polly: Please inform me if you're done..
Me: firewall is not turned on. it's not turned on on my modem, router, or PC. Nothing has changed on my PC. It worked fine, I changed my number, and now it doesn't work. I promise you it's a proxy server issue on your end because I am now talking to a different server than I was before
Polly: After that please unplug the magic jack and plug it into a USB port.
Me: can you please transfer me to someone that can fix this?
Me: My proxy server was proxy1.Columbus.talk4free.com and now it's proxy1.Dallas.talk4free.com and is not working. It's not my PC, it's not my firewall. It's just an issue at your end
Polly: You can add the talk for fr4ee using this steps.
Polly: Click Start tab and open your control panel... Go to internet options.. under privacy tab.. slide bar down to "allow all cookies" under security tab click on "trusted sites" then click the "sites" button.. type the following address into the text bar.. reg.talk4free.com click the "add" button.. now type in the following address.. my.magicjack.com and click "add". uncheck the box at bottom left of window that says "require server verification..." click "ok" then click "apply" close the internet options. unplug the magic jack and plug it back into a different usb port.]
Me: did not work
Polly: When you add the 2 links did you unplug the magic jack and plug it back to the USB port?
Me: yes. when magicjack talks to prov1.talk4free.com:443, it errors out. it's an auth error on your end.
Polly: Thank you for your patience. I will transfer you to a higher level of support. Please hold while I transfer you.
Me: thank you
info: Please wait while I transfer the chat to the best suited site operator.
info: You are now chatting with 'Stela'
Stela: Hello.
Me: Hello. Would you please read my previous chat session so I do not have to retype everything?
Stela: Yes I will.
Stela: May I know if your computer is behind a router?
Me: Yes. Firewall is disabled completely on the modem, router, and PC. MagicJack worked FINE until I changed the area code/phone number. NEVER had any problems until I did that. When the magicjack connects to prov1.talk4free.com:443 it errors out
Stela: I need you to open these following ports: UDP 5060 and 5070 since magicJack uses those ports
Me: I can't open something that is already open. THERE ARE NO FIREWALLS WHAT SO EVER!!!!! MAGIC JACK WORKED FINE UNTIL I CHANGED THE AREA CODE!!!!! WHICH MEANS IT TALKED FINE TO YOUR SERVERS UNTIL I CHANGED THE AREA CODE!!!!
Stela: So you're telling me that the ports are already added?
Me: Can you please transfer me to a higher level of support- someone who deals with SERVER errors!!!!
Jimmy: ALL PORTS ARE OPEN BECAUSE NO FIREWALL EXISTS!!!!
Stela: Okay.
Stela: Go to Control Panel>Network Connections>right click on your active Internet connection> select Properties>scroll down to Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click it>click on Properties.
Me: It just started working on it's own. I did nothing
Me: If you did something on your end, it is now working.
Me: I can now make calls
Me: no error
Stela: Great! Actually, I refreshed your account here on our database.
Stela: Is there anything else I may help you with today?
Me: You are awesome. Please tell other people that trick!!! :)
Stela: Yes I will.:)
Stela: Thank you for stopping by to chat, I hope I did a good job at addressing your concerns. Please take a second to answer a one question survey about the service I provided. Please click the "close" button on the top right of this screen and the survey will appear. Thanks again!

The same thing happened to me when I didn't change anything. I spent hours with them trying all sorts of changes without any luck. Then went to Level 2 and they wanted me to make the exact same changes that failed before! Ultimately, the MJ started working again and they said they had just "refreshed" my account. I told them they should try that FIRST from now on but I guess that they didn't take the hint. I'm willing to bet that 99% of the problems are caused on their end, especially when nothing has changed on our end.

I can explain. I used to work for MCI. Among other things, MCI was a third-party provider that contracted out their call center to other companies... so I worked for MCI but I answered phones for WebTV. Let me give you 2 scenarios:

Scenario 1:

Each caller is first routed to an automated message that says "If you've recently changed information to your account it can take up to 15 minutes for the server to refresh your account data. If it hasn't already been 20 minutes since you made the change please hang up and give it that long to let the server refresh the new data. If you've already allowed 20 minutes to pass and you're still having trouble please stay on the line and we'd be happy to help." Third-party company providing call center to answer Magic Jack tech support calls says "Well Magic Jack, you need to pay for 15 people to handle your tech support call volume."

Scenario 2:

Each caller isn't told the above message and instead is kept on the phone with 15 minutes of bull**** for every call. Third-party company providing call center to answer Magic Jack tech support calls says "Well Magic Jack, you need to pay for 30-50 people to handle your tech support call volume."

... make sense now?

Anyway, thanks for the above 2 posts. I'll open those ports on my router and go grab a bite to eat and see if I can make a call after that.

If you have your contacts saved....normally a quick one or two minute format will solve error 400
I have been a Magic Jack user since 2007.
Do you get "you must plug into a USB port" error ??
Do you get "Broken Storage" error ??
Tired of talking to support for hours ??!
Lost your contacts ??!
I can have you up and running in about 5 minutes !

I don't have any contacts, so no worries. I read somewhere else that it was because I'd let my 1 year service plan end, that buying another year doesn't automatically turn it back on... so I went to the site and chatted with one of their people and they restarted it for me. Only took about 5 minutes.

After renewing my account and moving my MagicJack to a windows 7 laptop I started getting "Error 400". I opened a live chat and asked them to refresh my account. I unplugged magicjack and re-plugged in... and was working within 5 minutes.

Thanks to the forum for pointing to this issue as a server side issue.

Also I had a problem with magicjack disconnecing my internet when I received or made a call. This turned out to be a conflict between my new wireless phone and my Motorola wireless router. I changed the router from channel 1 to 11... now it's working nicely.

Good luck all!
