OVer 90% CPU usage

Post by why-him »

Why on a certain computer would magicJack be using over 90% of CPU and having terrible sound quality (choppy, slurred)?

Incidentally, Skype seems to be behaving the same way. Any ideas what would cause this and how to deal with it?

Thanks,
Yosh

Give us the details on your computer. If MJ or skype is consuming that much I would look into cleaning up that computer. How many processes are running when you check in task manager? How much memory does your computer have?

I asked my friend who's having this problem, here's what he said:

"I have a Dell Celeron CPU 2.53 GHz, 2 GB ram, Windows XP. Currently 54 processes are running including 7 AVG, 8 Google Chrome, 7 SVChosts and I have about 60% CPU free."

I assume he's talking about without mJ plugged in.

Thanks,

54 processes is kind of high. I only have 42 running and thats when I have MJ running on my desktop. I only have 23 processes running while I'm typing this on this old laptop. I would recommend that you try and shutdown skype while using MJ and the reverse. The other thing would be to see what you can keep from starting up when you boot up the computer. Only use certain things when you need them. A guy by the name of Mike Lin has a nice tool that helps organize your computer and you can deceide what you want running when you start your computer. It's at www.mlin.net/ I have this on both of my computers and it works great. It's called startup control panel.

OC'ing and/or incorrect drivers will do this on common instances.

OC ??

Do you mean "over-clocking"? or something else?

RE: drivers - what to check? Any starting points you can suggest?

I'd make sure that the system isn't infected with a virus or malware - both of which can eat up a machine and MJ just puts things over the top. Especially since it appears that there are a LOT of processes running.
