Today we're pleased to announce we've acquired Gizmo5, a company that provides Internet-based calling software for mobile phones and computers. While we don't have any specific features to announce right now, Gizmo5's engineers will be joining the Google Voice team to continue improving the Google Voice and Gizmo5 experience. Current Gizmo5 users will still be able to use the service, though we will be suspending new signups for the time being, and existing users will no longer be able to sign up for a call-in number.
We welcome the Gizmo5 team to Google and look forward to working together to bringing more useful features to Google Voice.

Google acquired Gizmo5

Gizmo5 is sure to become a competitive force now that Google has acquired it. Lets hope MagicJack is paying attention because Gizmo5 + Google Voice is already everything MJ is not. BYOD, Voice Mail control, and very nice calling features and call quality are already there. My only complaint with the G5+GV setup is reliability which was spotty and a big deal. If not for that, I would have already junked the jack. I expect Google will fix the reliability issues.
Right now MJ has a better price with the fixed rate annual fee and better reliability. These advantages are slipping fast. Are you paying attention Dan? How about BYOD? How about the ability to control voicemail?
